Set in and around a quaint French village during the late 18th century, Beauty and the Beast follows the fantastic adventures of Belle, a bright and beautiful young woman who finds escape from her ordinary life, and the advances of a boorish suitor, Gaston, by reading books. Meanwhile, off in a castle in the distance, a cruel young prince is cast under the spell of an enchantress who turns him into a tormented beast, while transforming his servants into animated household objects. In order to remove the curse, the Beast must discover a true love who will return his affection before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose. When Belle's inventor father stumbles upon the Beast's castle and is taken prisoner, Belle comes to the rescue and agrees to take her father's place. With the help of the castle's enchanted staff, she sees beneath the Beast's exterior and discovers the heart and soul of a human prince.

The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. John Huston made better, more powerful films than The African Queen, but none so universally beloved, on first appearance and over the decades since. In this adaptation of the C.S. Forester novel, Humphrey Bogart (who would win the best-actor Oscar®) and Katharine Hepburn costar as an unlikely pair thrown together in German East Africa during the First World War. He's the gin-soaked skipper of what we might call the title character, a none-too-reliable steam launch chugging along the backwaters of the "Dark Continent." Hepburn's a straitlaced Methodist missionary who, following the demise of her bachelor brother (Robert Morley) and the burning of their village by Kaiser Wilhelm's troops, determines that the Queen should be used to attack the Königin Luise, a large German gunboat patrolling a lake downriver. It's an absurd proposition. Then again, John Huston and the absurd were always on familiar terms.

It wasn't until he got to the Congo that the director realized what a funny picture The African Queen was going to be, thanks to the odd coupling of Bogie and Kate: "One brought out a vein of humor in the other, and this comic sense, which had been missing from the book and screenplay, grew out of our day-to-day shooting." Within the gunwales of a not-very-large boat, Huston managed to devise myriad ways to keep his two leading characters on separate visual planes even as circumstance and tender emotional urgency conspired to push them together. This was Huston's first feature film in Technicolor, and the peerless Jack Cardiff (The Red Shoes) was there to shoot it. Unfortunately, neither of them could do anything about the process-screen technology needed for, and glaringly inadequate to, the sequence of Bogart and Hepburn shooting the rapids--just about the only lapse in an enchanting fairy tale for adults. The script is credited to Huston and James Agee; the uncredited Peter Viertel, summoned to the African locations to write some additional material, would later fictionalize the experience as White Hunter, Black Heart, a savage roman à clef. --Richard T. I was unaware of the game Hit Man so I didn't watch the movie with expectations or baggage linked to the game. I really identified with Timothy Olyphant's character "47". His focused and unyielding pursuit of his target is heroic in technique and execution. 47's ability to acknowledge yet evade the seduction of female interest Nika Boronina, played by Olga Kurylenko, was a pleasant twist on the typical plot and aided in the development and understanding of the no compromise mind set of the character. His proactive and offensive use of automatic weapons is admirable while his political understanding of covert missions allows him to effectively interface with Interpol and Moscow CIA field agents to his advantage. If there ever was a Hollywood covert affairs field agent training model this would be it.

It’s hard not to feel like one has entered a certain dimension of video-game logic while watching Hitman, a lightly enjoyable action-suspense movie indeed based on a popular and bloody game about a mysterious hired gun with a bar-code tattoo on his bald head and a number (47) in lieu of a name. Living like a chaste monk while slipping past borders to kill his targets, 47 (Timothy Olyphant of Deadwood) moves like a determined shark and speaks softly to his contact at the enigmatic "the Organization," which raises cast-off children to become well-paid assassins. Fruitlessly pursued by an Interpol cop (Dougray Scott) who can never get sovereign governments to cooperate, 47 has no trouble slipping in and out of countries to ply his trade. Until, that is, he’s set up to take a fall in Russia by shooting a national leader who is promptly replaced by a lookalike double. Suddenly on the run, 47 has to retrace his steps and formulate a lethal plan for extricating himself from a trap. Caught in the chaos is the lovely Nika (Olga Kurylenko), forced into sex slavery by 47’s new enemies and the one person who seems uniquely qualified to break through 47’s many personal barriers. Directed by France’s Xavier Gens, Hitman features loads of bloody mayhem and unabashed moments of pulp absurdity, such as a scene in which 47 and three other Organization killers agree to fight one another respectfully, then proceed to pulverize each other with swords and fists. As fodder for gamers, however, Hitman is packed with visuals and dramatic moments that seem so odd on the big screen until one realizes they are basically placemarkers for the video-game edition. --Tom Keogh

I bought this film for my wife, as it seemed to position itself as a chick flick (I assumed there would be enough content to keep my interest as we watched it). As it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is smart, funny, and a little deeper than its title might suggest. The blu-ray image was superb - as good as any I have seen. The premise of the film revolves around a Playboy bunny leaving the mansion and becoming the House Mother to a small group of apparently helpless and unpopular girls. If they don't get more pledges to their house soon, then their house is history. Enter the House Bunny, who gives them a makeover. So far, so predictable. However, this is where the film turns into something more interesting, as the house girls turn increasingly bitchy and our heroine is summoned back to the mansion to fulfil her dream of being a Playmate. Will she leave her house to follow her own dreams and, if she does, will they get the pledges they need? Watch it and find out. Oh, and my wife would never forgive me if I didn't mention the love story that is also integral to the film - the will she or won't she routine. The film left me with the intended feel good factor and a deeper appreciation of all things Playboy - Heff is a lucky guy - but this is a chick flick so I probably can't say that.

And the slightly misfit sisters, though wary, end up giving Shelley a sisterhood she could never have built back at the Grotto. To help build up the sorority, Shelley gives the young women her own peculiar tutorials in charm school--helping them raise their campus profile and recruit new pledges in the process. "When I'm done, every girl on campus will want to pledge Zeta!" Ignore her at your peril, girls. If the formula is a bit predictable, the pace is lively and the cast, headed by the wide-eyed Faris, is aces. American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee is a natural on camera, as is Rumer Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. The supporting cast includes the capable Colin Hanks and Beverly D'Angelo, and a bit too much screen time for the real-life Hugh Hefner, who maybe should have stayed on the set of The Girls Next Door. Still, Faris channels the cheerful, girly determination of Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods--no surprise since The House Bunny was cowritten by Kirsten Smith, who wrote Legally Blonde. Clive Barker's Book of Blood [Blu-ray] Review

Okay, if you are looking for a deep and intelligent film this is not the movie for you. But then again, horror is probably not the genre for you. However, if you are looking for a movie that makes you scream and laugh (mostly unintentionally, but that is another joy of the genre) then I think this movie is a perfect fit. I love this movie - it entertains me. It also doesn't hurt that Jonas Armstrong is a fox.

this is more involving. Traces the inner descent of a scientist/doctor in the Northeast trying to deny the inevitability of his wonderful wife's death, into internal fantasy worlds. He identifies in his mind with a past conquistador in love with the queen of Spain/his wife, whom to save he must find the Tree of Life in New Spain amidst warlike aborigines; AND with a future transcendent being in another galaxy who carries this Tree in a bubble/dome, is nourished by eating small pieces of it, and identifies the tree with his wife and/or visions of his wife simultaneously. He is recalled to the present from these archetype "realities," seeking to instantaneously create a miracle cure in monkey brains at a time when when he should be physically and emotionally present with the poor wife.
All is well at the end, however, with his acceptance of her death as having had meaning, as fantasy and reality coalesce--or not(?)
Not a linear flick, cinematography and music make up for plot holes from production restructuring; should be watched more than once if you can avoid taking it as reality.

Science fiction and romance collide in The Fountain, the ambitious third feature from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), who labored for four years to complete this epic-sized love story that stretches across centuries and galaxies. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Aronofsky's real-life companion) play lovers in each of the film's three settings--16th century Europe and America (Jackman is a Spanish explorer searching for Incan magic), the present day (Jackman is a doctor attempting to cure his dying wife), and the 26th century (Jackman is a space traveler seeking a gateway to the afterlife)-–who struggle mightily to stay united, only to lose each other time and again. Aronofsky may not have chosen the easiest presentation for audiences to absorb his theories on the lasting qualities of life and the transformative powers of death-–the final sequence, in particular, with a bald Jackman floating through space in a bubble, harks back uncomfortably to "head movies" of the late '60s-–but his leads have considerable chemistry (and look terrific to boot), which goes a long way towards securing viewers' hopes for a happy ending. Critical reception for The Fountain has been nothing short of bloodthirsty, with Cannes audiences booing, but there are elements to enjoy here, even if the premise throws one for a loop. Ellen Burstyn (who earned an Oscar nomination for Requiem) delivers a typically solid performance as Jackman's boss in the present day sequence, and special effects (most done without the benefit of CGI) are also impressive given the film's low budget (spurred by a mid-production shutdown after original stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett ankled the picture). And science-fiction fans whose tastes run towards the metaphysical (Asimov, Le Guin) will appreciate the attempt to present the genre in a serious light. --Paul Gaita

The Midnight Meat Train [Blu-ray] Review

Of all the Barker stories penned or adapted to film I can think of (Hellraiser, Rawhead Rex, Lord of Illusions, Nightbreed, Valerie Under the Stairs, Haeckle's Tale), this is the best. The director did a great job with the shots/angles to really give the film that extra level of creepiness. The acting was good, the script solid, and though there were some conveniences in the plot, the overall quality is of such it was easy for me to overlook that.

Other reviewers have summed up the plot nicely, just wanted to show the world that my thumbs are up on this for what its worth...

Final Destination 3 [Import] [Blu-ray] Review

Final Destination 3 heads away from the first two movies in the series (which were linked by having some common characters) and brings in a brand new batch of players who escape death due to an uncanny premonition by one of their group, this time a high school student named Wendy (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, one of my personal favorites), only to have death seemingly come after them, as the survivors again begin dying in a series of bizarre freak accidents. The connection to the previous movies is basically established by some internet research undetaken by Wendy after the deaths begin, which uncovers a history of similar phenomenon - groups of people who avoid death thanks to a premonition, only to all die shortly afterwards, usually under weird circumstances.

This time the 'cause of death' which claims a number of lives isn't a plane crash or a multi-car pile-up on the highway, but an accident on an amusement park roller coaster ride. The Final Destination series has become famous for some really spectacular sequences involving the various accidents and/or death's attempts to reclaim its victims, and the roller coaster scenario certainly sets the stage for a continuation of this theme. As a note of interest, an additional possible link to previous films comes in the form of the 'voice of the devil' at the entrance to one of the amusement park rides: the voice is that of Tony Todd, who also played the undertaker Mr. Bludworth in the first two Final Destination films, the eerie guy who seems to know too much about this whole phenomenon. Whether this was just a neat bit of casting or whether there's an actual connection to the voice and the Bludworth character is in the same class as all the questions about Bludworth that were in the subtext of the previous movies. It's there waiting to be explored further, should they choose to do so in a future movie.

In the first Final Destination, the group who survived were members of a high school class who all knew each other but didn't necesarily get along, and they grew closer as they faced the death phenomenon. In Final Destination 2 it was mostly strangers, mostly likable characters, who quickly knit into a cohesive group. In this chapter the survivors mostly know each other peripherally, but in contrast to the first two movies, the group grows increasingly at odds and in some cases hostile as events escalate. After noticing that the deaths happen in the same order that they would have if the premonition hadn't changed things, one character even comes up with the idea that maybe most of the deaths - including his own - could be avoided if they just knocked off the last person on the list first. So the pursuit of the death phenomenon itself isn't necessarily the only threat this time around. The acting, as usual in the series is well done; Amanda Crew from The Haunting in Connecticut (Unrated Special Edition), another of my personal favorites, is also in it as Wendy's younger (by a year) sister Julie. The special effects are fantastic.

The DVD version of Final Destination 3 makes use of a unique 'Choose Your Fate' option, where the viewer will periodically make decisions for the characters using the remote, some of which actually change the movie. Very cool feature that I'm surprised hasn't been used a bit more often; it would lose its appeal if used too often, but if used for the right movie every now and then, I think it would be good. It certainly seems more appealing to me than all the next-generation special features for Blu-Ray, like watching the movie and watching the 'making of' at the same time in separate boxes.

The third chapter of the Final Destination series doesn't re-invent the wheel of the series, it just uses that existing wheel to extremely good effect and gives it some extra twists and turns. One of the best installments in a great series, and the 'Choose Your Fate' option is an extra bonus, especially for repeat viewing.

Final Destination 3 [Import] [Blu-ray] Overview

Giddily gruesome and perversely entertaining, Final Destination 3 proves, yet again, that horror franchises will thrive as long as teenagers keep finding spectacular ways to die. A stand-alone sequel to the first two Final Destination thrillers, this one begins when a group of seven high-school graduates luckily escape from a deadly roller-coaster disaster, only to discover that their own deaths have been only temporarily avoided. Cute brunette Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) spots clues of impending doom in digital photos of her soon-to-be-expiring classmates, and an ill wind follows her everywhere, suggesting the presence of a supernatural force that makes her a catalyst for gory events, as each of her friends is dispatched in the order they were meant to die. Returning to give their brainchild a suspenseful, low-budget makeover, franchise creators and former X-Files writers James Wong and Glen Morgan cleverly play on our collective fears (the roller coaster sequence is genuinely terrifying) with a knowing nod to violent urban legends, which explains their inclusion of the '70s hit "Love Roller Coaster" on the soundtrack when two stuck-up girlfriends pay an ill-fated visit to a tanning parlor. And that's just for starters: With Wong as director, FD3 serves up its grisly deaths with tight pacing and humor, and the cathartic carnage is discreetly edited yet gory enough to satisfy hardcore horror buffs. When morbid mayhem is this much fun, it's a safe bet that another sequel is just around the corner. --Jeff Shannon

Last Exile: Complete Series [Blu-ray] Review

Imagine a world divided into two warring nations, full of airborne warships, political tangles, and a mysterious riddle that will decide all their fates.

"Last Exile: The Complete Series" is full of all these things, filled with glorious CGI, likable characters and some truly brilliant plot twists near the end. The plot becomes kind of knotted up in the last lap of the series, but it's still a beautifully rendered story about love, friendship and occasionally revenge -- and it's rendered in such beautiful animation that it simply sweeps you away.

Vanship pilot Claus Valca and his buddy Lavie Head are in the middle of a race when they encounter a mystery pilot being chased by a Guild star-ship. His cargo: a little girl named Alvis.

Unfortunately, getting Alvis safely to the rendezvous is no easy task -- especially when the ship picking her up turns out to be the legendary, deadly Silvana. But Claus and Lavie don't want their new friend to be alone and frightened, so they manage to make their way onto the Silvana, and end up becoming part of its crew. Of course, the head vanship pilot Tatiana Wisla isn't too happy about that.

And life aboard the Silvana is anything but boring for the two teenagers. Claus and Lavie take part in a vast vanship race, a battle with the overblown Goliath, a rebellion against the Emperor, and a crash landing in the middle of the desert. And Claus has caught the interest of the whimsical Dio of the Guild -- the younger brother of the cold-hearted, calculating Delphine.

What's more, the Silvana's journey is somehow wrapped up in the mysteries of the Grand Stream, a search for revenge by the Silvana's captain, the secrets of the Mysteria, and the very future of their world. What is Exile, and where will it lead?

"Last Exile" is one of those series that blurs the lines of genre and style -- it feels like a more ethereal brand of steampunk, complete with Victorian trappings and advanced airships. It's full of glowing light, vast expanses of cloads and flowing cities, and beautiful mountainous landscapes and clouds that could have come straight from a Hayao Miyazaki movie. Not to mention some brilliant airborne battles.

The many subplots of the series unspool gradually throughout each episode, twining together as the plot goes on -- such as Alex's vendetta, the plans of the villain Delphine, and the mysterious Grand Stream that seems to be central to the mysteries of Prester. The dialogue is rather run-of-the-mill, but the carefully-drawn world (complete with water shortages and a fictional fuel called "claudia") make up for that, as well as the tangled political clashes that stretch from one episode to the next.

The last few episodes are a bit of a mindbender. The plot becomes a bit tangled up, before twisting into a startling revelation about the world of Prester -- which admittedly, while carefully foreshadowed, is quite a surprise when it's revealed.

Claus and Lavie make a likable pair of protagonists -- he's mellow, sweet and rather laid-back, while she's fiery and easily upset ("This is OUR vanship, and YOU can't touch it!"), so they end up playing well off each other. And the supporting cast is a pretty solid one, with a ride range of personalities and plenty of likable minor characters (like the mechanics). Among the standouts: the melancholy and mysterious Alex Rowe, Alvis, the whimsical and tragic Dio, and vanship pilot Tatiana (who develops a crush on Claus).

"Last Exile: The Complete Series" has a few odd twists, but it's a solid and atmospheric anime series that glides slowly to a rather startling conclusion.

Pandorum,released Sept/09,gives us an interesting and different twist in the Sci-Fi genre.The cast is generally confined to a few people at a time on screen and the film manages to capture and maintain an all-pervading atmosphere of oppression and danger,throughout its run.
The story is set in 2247 and the Earth has gone to hell in a hand basket.It has sent a large spaceship full of new colonists(some 16,000 souls)to an Earth-like world some 40 light years away called Tanis,to resettle and populate.However something has gone terribly wrong during the flight.A Corp.Bower awakens from hyper sleep to find that he is seemingly alone on the ship the Elysium,in an ante room cut off from the ships bridge.Just as he regains some of his senses another stasis tube opens and out is ejected one Lieut.Payton.He is as confused as Bower due to their extended hyper sleep and they come to the conclusion that they must regain access to the bridge in order to fully reassess their situation,whatever it is.
Bower elects to crawl through the above duct work in order to hopefully reach the bridge.However his claustrophobic antics in the ducts send him crashing to a grate,through that and then onto the floor;not on the bridge as he'd hoped.As he inspects his surroundings he comes upon a body suspended by a wire in a long hall way.The person is alive but he is no mood to help Bower and in short order Bower discovers there is more life on the ship than this man and the lieutenant;and it is quite malevolent.They hide but Bowers new "find" is dragged away to his death by the creatures;humanoid beings that run and crawl with amazing speed and wear an exoskeleton of bones.
The farther Bower explores the ship the more creatures he encounters.In fact he manages to hook up with two other crew members along the way,a man(who speaks no English)and a woman;both are just as bewildered and terrified of their surroundings as Bower.Pieces of this mysterious puzzle slowly start to come together as the film progresses and we learn that these wild creatures roaming the ship were once humans like themselves.It seems that some genetic enhancement in their cryo-tube feeder lines which was supposed to help kick start life on the new planet has somehow mutated many of the colonist.Bower's memory also slowly returns to him bit by bit and he realizes that the reactor must be restarted in order to gain control of the ship properly.With this in mind he heads down to the lowest and most dangerous levels of the ship to reach it with his companions.
Lieut.Payton meanwhile has had his hands full.A young corporal has come out of a cryo pod in Bowers absence and the corporal has all the signs of pandorum;a slow build up of extreme paranoia which can lead to severe harm to those around.As he deals with the corporal he tries to guide Bower and company to the reactor.Things however deteriorate to such an extent he is over powered and forced by the corporal to eject him off the ship in a life pod.But it is only a simulation run by the lieutenant and in there the corporal stays temporarily.Back at the reactor things are touch and go.The resting area for the blood thirsty creatures is at the base of the reactor.The walkway above which leads to the reactor controls gives way under Bowers feet and he falls to another extending section of the reactor.However he must go down and walk through the creatures while they rest/sleep and climb the ladder back up to the controls.Just as he reaches the ladder the creatures wake up and pursue Bower and company.Bower manages to finally get the reactor online which disintegrates many of the creatures at its base.However it is still a mad dash back to the bridge and "safety" from those creatures still alive,and there are plenty.
The corporal that Lieut.Payton held in the pod is now out again and they are in a hand to hand struggle.Payton manages to subdue him with a tranquilizer gun,but wait.The corporal IS the lieutenant!He,suffering from pandorum himself,was responsible for ejecting around 1600 passengers early on in the flight.He re-entered a cryo sleep until awakened later to meet an unsuspecting Bower.Now Bower and the only one of two of his companions left,confront Payton.Payton opens the shield doors from the observation windows above to reveal an inky blackness with no stars.When an alien life form swims by the windows illuminating some of the surroundings,it is then they realize they are under water.The Elysium had crash landed underwater 923 years before.When a crack in the window forms during their struggle with Payton and water starts to enter,Bower and his companion enter a cryo tube and eject themselves.In short order what colonists that are left on board are also being ejected because of the hull breach.They all end up on the water surface looking across at a beautiful island with a waterfall;just waiting for them to finally begin their colonization of Tanis.
The film moves back and forth between Payton and Bowers at just the right moments.Besides the creatures,there are rarely any more than three people on the screen at one time.The claustrophobia is maintained beautifully throughout and is heightened considerably in such areas as the duct work,full of round tubing that is unforgiving and almost seems alive.The big picture as to exactly what is going on is also kept to a minimum throughout.The characters and we the viewers are kept in the dark and only given enough snippets to pique our interest just to keep things moving at the pace the director wants.So when we finally realize that the corporal and the lieutenant are one and the same and the ship is actually under water and not lost in space,the punch is considerable.Well crafted to be sure and it is what makes Pandorum the good movie it is.
Technically the film is in its' widescreen glory in its 2:35:1 a/r.The transfer is clear and crisp.Special features include three featurettes,one a behind-the-scenes,a mock flight team video for the Elysium and a Blair Witch-like video of what happened to Nadia's team.There is also the trailer,commentary and some deleted and alternate scenes.The DVD I have comes with a holographic like cover over the usual snap case.Nice.
All in all a different,likable and smart twist in the Sci Fi genre.The oppressive atmosphere the makers maintain throughout the film is wonderfully done and they leave you guessing right down to the final moments.I recommend it.

Pandorum [Blu-ray] Specifications

Largely dismissed as yet another Alien carbon, the science-fiction/horror hybrid Pandorum exceeds the limits of that critique with an agreeable mix of atmospherics and high-voltage scares. Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid--two consistently watchable actors, and both well used here--are top-billed as a pair of space travelers who awake from lengthy hibernation with no idea who they are or how they got aboard a vast and seemingly empty spacecraft. Their exploration of the ship uncovers not only a handful of fellow humans, among them martial arts champ Cung Le and French scientist/requisite eye candy Antje Traue, but a host of feral mutants with unpleasant designs on them. Director Christian Alvert, who gained international acclaim among genre viewers with his thriller Antibodies, keeps viewers engaged and unsettled with shadow-steeped cinematography and elaborately creepy production design, though his own attention span, which can be charitably described as blink and you'll miss it, obscures the clashes between the human and monster cast. However, Alvert has a few twists up his sleeve for the finale--one inspired, the other, less so--which not only helps to smooth over any of Pandorum's rougher edges, but also indicates that he's a genre director to watch. --Paul Gaita

Bruce Almighty [Blu-ray] Review

This is a review for the film BRUCE ALMIGHTY (2003), dby Tom Shadyak and released by Universal Studios.

A TV reporter, played by Jim Carrey, frustrated by work and domestic
problems demands an explanation from God and ultimately meets the Man Himself, played by Morgan Freeman. God decides to take a vacation and let Bruce Nolan, the reporter, run things for a while just to see what He's up against. Bruce soon gains a new understanding of life around him and realizes that this world and the people in it all have faults and are not here just to please or even frustrate him...or Him.

Really well done fantasy made with humor and enough realism to be sort of believable. In fact, most of the characters in this dramady are well drawn and well portrayed, even the weasely one is kind of likable in his way. But maybe I was sitting too close to the screen and some of Morgan Freeman's divine intentions were accidentally splashed on me.
Not that I'm complaining, I wouldn't want to repeat Bruce Nolan's mistakes.

I give BRUCE ALMIGHTY Four Stars.

OK, let's get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colorful (if crude) animation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It's rife with scatological humor, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness, and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada," blaming their neighbors to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world.

To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful antiprofanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMMKay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There," Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables. And in advocating free speech and satirizing well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups (with a special nod to the MPAA), Bigger, Longer & Uncut hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can't repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip's hit song, but you'll be rolling on the floor. Don't worry, though--to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won't warp your fragile little mind. Unless you have something against the First Amendment. --Mark Englehart

The story revolves around a metal briefcase with undisclosed contents coveted by Irish terrorists and the Russian mob. Robert De Niro plays an ex CIA agent, who trusts no one, but needs the money.Natascha McElhone plays the Irish liaison who is responsible for assembling a group of mercenaries to get the metal case in her hands. The team plays hard and there are many wild chase scenes. Many bystanders are killed or maimed during these chases but for some reason the story goes on and on about who gets the case?

When all is said and done, it is entertaining and full of intrigue.

Robert De Niro stars as an American intelligence operative adrift in irrelevance since the end of the Cold War--much like a masterless samurai, a.k.a. "ronin." With his services for sale, he joins a renegade, international team of fellow covert warriors with nothing but time on their hands. Their mission, as defined by the woman who hires them (Natascha McElhone), is to get hold of a particular suitcase that is equally coveted by the Russian mafia and Irish terrorists. As the scheme gets underway, De Niro's lone wolf strikes up a rare friendship with his French counterpart (Jean Reno), gets into a more-or-less romantic frame of mind with McElhone, and asserts his experience on the planning and execution of the job--going so far as to publicly humiliate one team member (Sean Bean) who is clearly out of his league. The story is largely unremarkable--there's an obligatory twist midway through that changes the nature of the team's business--but legendary filmmaker John Frankenheimer (Seconds, The Manchurian Candidate) leaps at the material, bringing to it an honest tension and seasoned, breathtaking skill with precision-action direction. The centerpiece of the movie is an honest-to-God car chase that is the real thing: not the how-can-we-top-the-last-stunt cartoon nonsense of Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon), but a pulse-quickening, kinetic dance of superb montage and timing. In a sense, Ronin is almost Frankenheimer's self-quoting version of a John Frankenheimer film. There isn't anything here he hasn't done before, but it's sure great to see it all again. --Tom Keogh

Slayers Revolution: The Complete Fourth Season [Blu-ray] Review

It's been over a decade since there was a new season of "Slayers," but better late than never. "Slayers Revolution" is a solid first half to the long-awaited fourth season, although it suffers from some wobbles in execution -- not only is it fun to revisit Lina, Gourry and their colorful unruly world, but the writers introduce some clever twists and concepts along the way.

Lina and Gourry have been busy nabbing pirates on the high seas, but they're unexpectedly interrupted by Amelia, Zelgadis, and the Ruvinagald Inspector Wizer, who promptly arrests Lina for "the crime of being Lina Inverse"... and for blowing up some magic tanks with the Dragonslave.

The actual culprit is actually a sort of... flying stuffed bunny thing called Pokota, who can cast almost every spell Lina knows AND has a Sword of Light replica. The gang ends up on the road again, pursuing Pokota and being dogged by Wizer. Of course, they come across new problems on the way -- kidnapped pets, a golem festival, assassins on a ship, and Wizer's attempts to trap Lina in a building full of booby-traps (such as "do not push" buttons).

Pokota also leads the gang into the presumed-lost Taforashia, a ruined city shrouded in mist whose inhabitants are locked in a magical suspended animation... courtesy of the infamous Red Priest Rezo. Unfortunately, a corrupt Ruvinagald marquess and her servants (a ninja, a clockwork robot, and a beastman) are using Taforashia's magical technology to gain power -- and when Lina and her friends try to stop the marquess, a devastating evil is unleashed that could destroy the entire world.

It's a pretty awesome feeling to see the "Slayers" cast in action again, like revisiting old friends whom you haven't seen for a long time. The first few episodes of "Slayers Revolution" are rather weak (seriously, a stuffed toy that can cast the Dragonslave?), only to gain their footing when the Taforashia storyline is woven in. You know what to expect: lots of explosions, arguments, Lina and Gourry gobbling down feasts, and Amelia attacking in the name of justice.

As usual, there's a string of standalone stories interwoven with a solid plot arc, which harkens back to the first season of "Slayers", involving a kingdom locked in a magical barrier, and an elaborate web of lies that lead to a monster being unleashed on the world. There's plenty of hilarious dialogue ("I think it might be edible!"), a hearty dose of comic relief (Gourry's special bond with a jellyfish chimera), and lots of explosive action. The finale is utterly thrilling -- a dramatic three-episode eruption of smashing stones, Dragonslaves, energy blasts, and a giant silver dragon-dog-thing that craves destruction.

Lina is still flat-chested, assertive, hypersensitive and wonderfully bombastic -- and in this one, she encounters someone as crazy and magically-skilled as she is. Gourry is struggling to fight bad guys without a sword that can withstand his strength, Zelgadis has mellowed out somewhat, and Amelia has to grapple with a shocking discovery about her kingdom. And Xellos.... is Xellos. As usual, he's got secrets.And it's worth noting that Funimation (bless 'em) is reuniting almost the entire cast -- Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart, Veronica Taylor, and Crispin Freeman. The one change is Michael Sinterklaas as Xellos.

Additionally, Pokota is kind of annoying but gradually becomes likable as we see what drives him, and the tragic past he's trying to correct, while Duclis is the figure of a noble man corrupted by hatred. Wizer seems like an idiot who constantly tries to arrest Lina and impress the ladies, but soon you find that he's almost scarily clever and manipulative. Flan and Zollan are pretty boring, though.

It's not quite revolutionary, but after a bumpy first few episodes "Slayers Revolution" charges along like a runaway magical tank -- and of course, it leaves plot threads dangling for the next half of the season.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a truly epic movie, with thrills, excitement, and emotion, that never disappoints and really brings the Wizarding World to life. This film really entertained me, and is a welcome restoration of the Potter magic for anyone who disliked the dreary, overly-depressing feel of "Prisoner of Azkaban".

I was fortunate enough to see this film on its opening day of November 18, 2005, and to this day, five years on, I still think it is one of the best out of all the films and my favorite movie out of the whole series. As a humongous fan of the books and the first two films, I wasn't going to miss seeing this one, and was given a pleasant surprise upon discovering how good it was.

It's no easy feat adapting a hulking 734-page novel to a workable two-and-a-half-hour production that doesn't lag nor run by too quickly and feel rushed, but the filmmakers did a splendid job in balancing things out so you don't feel as if the whole thing has been butchered. It keeps moving, but does not go at such a break-neck speed as films five and six do that there isn't time to relax and enjoy things like the music, the scenery, or the more intimate interactions between characters.

Obviously, with a book that large, you're going to have to cut out something, and I for one feel that the proper choices were made in doing away with several rather pointless sub-plots (Hermione's S.P.E.W initiative, for example, which I was glad was cut because it made her seem a little childish and annoying; or the inclusion of Ludo Bagman, which made the it longer than it should have been) to cut out some time. Even with cuts, it stays surprisingly faithful, so it won't disappoint fans, and it successfully retains the novel's spirit while also managing to remake itself into a film that flows nicely and may even rival the book.

Nothing can be entirely flawless, but "Goblet" comes close. Everything was done right, from the pacing to the casting to the music to the directorial decision. In short, one couldn't ask for a better film. The director, Mike Newell, as well as the screenwriter Steven Kloves, really chose to emphasize the real feeling of a British boarding school, as well as increase the drama of the darkness concerning Voldemort's return to power. The TriWizard Tournament is expanded to heroic proportions, and is one-hundred times more exciting than what was originally written, which makes watching this film even more interesting to anyone who is already familiar with the book.

The visual look of the film is amazing, and even better than what I could have imagined. Hogwarts has this golden glow to it, and feels incredibly warm and cozy, the kind of place you always imagined it to be, but up till this point had never seen before in any of the previous films. The cinematography is beautiful, and the special effects are perhaps the most effective we've seen in any of the films.

The music Patrick Doyle has written is breathtaking. With this score, he's created another gem. It is right up there with John Williams in the magic department, but is more tuneful and romantic. Let's just say you might be humming the songs right out of the theatre.

As far as acting goes, everyone, the adult actors included, are better than ever. After five years, everyone seems to have really slipped imperceptibly into their characters, so that it's difficult to separate the performance from the reality. The younger actors, particularly the three main stars, have really improved in the capabilities, and give astounding performances that are filled with insight and pathos.

Daniel Radcliffe especially has come a long way from the wide-eyed little 11-year-old he was when the series started. I thought his performance in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" was a little stilted and lacking, even in comparison with the first two films, in which he was very good. Here, he brings a sensitivity and courageousness to Harry that even J.K. Rowling hasn't been able to put across as well. Harry still has his flaws, but he is easier to relate to. He is also a bit smarter, which was a great improvement; he's too dull in the books and gets on your nerves after a while because of his sheer stupidity!

Ralph Fiennes gives a chilling performance as Lord Voldemort, and if you aren't as creeped out as I was seeing him in full regalia, then you'd better go back and watch the scene in the graveyard a few more times.

There is absolutely nothing I can find that I didn't like about this film, except the inclusion of the heavy rock numbers during the Yule Ball scenes (I found them terribly out of place, even though the Weird Sisters band were included in the novel; but then again, I'm not one of those people who enjoys that sort of music), but aside from that, everything else was perfect, and I highly recommend this film.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold.

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. Stardust [Blu-ray] Review

I won't rehash the plot, but rather simply say that "Stardust" was a pleasure to watch. While it borrows a lot of fantasy elements you've probably seen already, it invents (or introduces) quite a few of its own. It's quite amusing at times and visually impressive, to boot. While Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer do very good jobs in their respective roles, they--particularly De Niro--didn't exactly fit, possibly due to their American accents. Claire Danes, however, does a masterful job, regardless of the fact that she was born in NYC.

But he’s in for the adventure of his life when he discovers the star is actually a celestial beauty named Yvaine (Danes). Stardust [Blu-ray] Specifications

Stardust settles over the viewer like a twinkly cloak. The film, which captures the magic and vision of author Neil Gaiman's fantasy graphic fable, is a transportive journey into a world of true enchantment, which fans of the Harry Potter books will enjoy as well as will adults looking for the perfect date movie. The tale is a not-so-simple love story and adventure, set in 19th century England--and an alternate universe of witches, spells and stars that turn human--and hold the key to eternal life.

Young Tristan (played with wide-eyed vigor by Charlie Cox) vows to retrieve a fallen star for the most beautiful girl in the village, the shallow Victoria (Sienna Miller), and in his quest, finds his true love--in a true "meet-cute" moment (by Babylon-candle-speeding into the just-crashed human incarnation of the star, Claire Danes). Much of the film involves the duo's journey back home--though home for Tristan is his village, and home for the celestial Yvaine is, of course, in the heavens. There are villains, notably Michelle Pfeiffer as the vain witch who seeks the fountain of youth a fallen star can give, and the seven venal sons of the dying king of the mythical realm, backstabbing, grasping, and hilarious--even in death as a ghostly Greek chorus.

While the sparks of love between Tristan and Yvaine are resonant and touching, Stardust truly succeeds as a brilliant fantasy yarn--and as a comedy with more than its share of belly laughs. Much of the humor belongs to Robert De Niro, who plays a notoriously wicked air pirate, who is secretly a bit light in his swashbucklers. Ricky Gervais has a small but memorable role essentially channeling his character from Extras, including his catchphrase, "Are you having a laugh?!" The special effects are all that any fan of Gaiman would wish for. Catch a bit of Stardust and you'll feel enchanted for a good long while. --A.T. Hurley

I am NOT reviewing the DVD. Just the movies unless otherwise stated.

Please note that the rating above might not accurately reflect my thoughts, you will see a rating sentence at the end of the review.

This movie was fantastic. Even though I personally don't believe that the Apollo missions were real, this movie is God D@m real!!!! First, it bugs me that Tom Hanks looks like Dan Akroid. Second, it bugs me that WWE would name a stupid wrestler (not to say wrestlers are stupid,) after one great Astronaut. Thirdly, this movie makes you feel like your there. The acting and visuals are so impressive, they give you the feeling of what it would be like in there in space.

The director was OBVIOUSLY extremely smart. He puts every shot into thought, something as smart as I get I will never have the patients to do. The scriptwriter went above and beyond with only one problem: The movie either feels long or is to long, took me two days to watch this film. The producer didn't spare any expense he gave them the opprotunity, and the editor does things exactly right. The slashers who made this movie are fantastic.

It's interesting that they tell the story of Apollo 13 and not 12 or 1, that was not typical. They also don't recreat any transmissions, only scenes. What I mean is that they use real television broadcasts from 1970. Again, the acting is awesome, it makes you feel like you know these guys. Even as this is based off real life, it took a good director to recognize the irony and drama that went into this story.

Heck. what am I saying, A1 was a pretty huge part of this movie. But it's like, it's like dirt. Not bad, but good. Dirt makes up so much of what we call the earth, or at least what we feel is earth, yet we recognize plants and animals more like earth. But dirt not only makes up more earth, not only does it help keep living things survive, it is earth. Basically, in a sense, Apollo 13 was Apollo 1 except successful. It's the symbolsim and metaphor stuff you here about in school.

I could talk more and more about how this movie is so realistic, but here's the stuff: this is awesome space. It gives you the fun of space. It gives you space, outer space, but not space between you and a zillion years of cold darkness. But, that's the thing: this movie is all over the place.

At this point you probably wonder: why the heck was he reviewed Apollo 13 and not Star Wars? Well, I used to do reviews for YouTube. When I watch a movie more than once, it almost takes away the charm unless it's done amazingly. I also need to get off my butt and watch some of the movies in my collection,

And Apollo 13, the rating? 4.9/5. Almost there, just not there yet.

Fritz Lang's Metropolis belongs to legend as much as to cinema. It's a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. Yet the story makes minimal sense, and the "theme" belongs in a fortune cookie; to experience the film's pagan power, you have to see the movie. But for decades we couldn't, not really--not with so many versions, all incomplete, often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies. This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that. Some shots, scenes, and subplots may be lost forever, but intertitles indicate how they fit into the original continuity and the characters' individual trajectories. Most crucially, the images are crisp, vibrant, and three-dimensional instead of murky and flattened. The composite sequences (the Tower of Babel, a sea of lusting eyes) have been restored to their hallucinatory ferocity. And there's one moment when you can see a bead of sweat roll down a man's cheek--in medium long-shot. --Richard T. Jameson

Heroic Age: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Review

Overall, this is a wonderful series which combines similar ideas from other anime series' such as Guyver, Gundam, and Evangelion, as well as throwing Greek/Roman Mythology and Sci-Fi elements like those of Star Wars into the mix as well. Character designs are good, and the American voice acting is quite convincing 90% of the time.

My only complaints are that sometimes, the voice acting becomes over the top, and usually annoying. Examples include that of the Princess Dhianeila constantly crying for no reason. I mean, yes, I understood why she was crying half the time, but the rest of the time I swear, she just started crying out of no where. Other annoying voice acting complaints are for that of Dhianeila's brothers. They're convincing a lot of the time, and tend to seem quite evil, but then when things go wrong they becoming whiny and extremely irritating. Aside from some voice acting/character complaints, the only other major complaint that I have is that I counted quite a few animations that were rehashed over and over through out the series, making the animation quality seem somewhat lazy. The 3D animation of ships is nice too in most spots, and successfully makes it look hand drawn. Sometimes though, the 3D animations can seem a bit cheap, and look like something in a cell shaded anime video game (basically it just doesn't seem to mesh well with the rest of the drawn animations). Some character designs are also a bit annoying. At times some of the characters seem disturbingly skinny, as if they were all bone and had no muscle or fat. Another character flaw is that for one of the Silver Tribe leaders and that of Lt. General Nilval. Both seem to go around with with half of their boobs hanging out of their clothes, and in Nilval's case with her cape tacs (I say tacs but they look like spikes) placed awkwardly on her clothes where her nipples should be, as if trying to say "Hey, I have huge boobs, so I'll tease you and show you half of them, and make it look like I have metal spikes for nipples."

Again, overall this series is quite good, but a few reoccurring issues keep this from being as good as it could be.

The Heartbreak Kid [Blu-ray] Review

Talk about a movie that takes you, spins your head around in circles and dumps you all over the place the Heartbreak Kid breaks a lot of rules of film making and comedy and does it well.

It tells the story of a single guy Ben Stiller who is unable to find a woman, his sex obsessed father (played by his father Jerry) and his best pal Mac who are all looking to get him married off.

The movie starts to get you invested in his plight as he goes from embarrassment to embarrassment until he seems to come across the right girl, Lila.

In a mere 5 weeks pushed by his father and friend he marries her, and it is on the drive down to their honeymoon retreat to Mexico that things get interesting...

...that's where he meets the girl of his dreams, Miranda.

From here the plot twist and turns from disaster to disaster, in terms of the comedy the Farrellys set you up for every turn from Carlos Mencia through Miranda's family to the twins who after a brief introduction at the beginning of the film are used for great comic effect. The reaction of his father and best friends to his martial problems made me instantly think of the famous Three Stooges short The Three Stooges Collection Volume 2 Husbands Beware.

The comedy becomes so odd and the situations so ridiculous (one scene with Jerry Stiller on the phone with his son from Vegas still gives me the shudders) that you don't know what to do. The Farrellys slowly build up sympathy for Eddie as the film and then slowly bit by bit start to remove it until you wonder if you want him to get the girl of his dreams.

When you see the final scene (not counting the Easter egg with the Donkey)you realize who and what these characters are. It is a very disarming experience.

Oh and don't do what I did, I watched it directly after seeing Trade talk about getting your head and mind twisted all over the place.

This film is so not for kids it isn't funny, there are at least two sex scenes where I wonder how the actors involved managed to keep a straight face. I couldn't do it. Paradoxically it is, in many ways, a morality play, all the wrong and foolish decisions have all the consequences they should have, in at least one case tragic results. So on second thought maybe you should make your teenage daughters watch it and Learn!

It is slapstick, it is deep comedy, it is sexual comedy, it is mind games, it is a morality play, it is cheep bawdy humor all rolled up into one brilliant package!

I don't know if it's a keeper but it should be seen at least once. One piece of advice: When I watch Arsenic and Old Lace I always try to see it with people who never have, their reactions are priceless. This movie is no Arsenic & old Lace but I suspect the reactions would be the same.

Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers bring out the best in each other. In The Heartbreak Kid, Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, who--persuaded by his father and friends that he's commitment-phobic--marries a gorgeous and seemingly ideal woman named Lila (Malin Akerman, The Brothers Solomon) that he's been dating for several weeks. But after the wedding, things start to go awry... the least of these being that on their honeymoon, Eddie meets a woman who might truly be the girl of his dreams (Michelle Monaghan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). As in There's Something About Mary, writers/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly push Stiller away from his increasingly schticky "tense guy" persona and draw out his sweeter, more multilayered earnest side. On his end, Stiller provides a human core to what could just be a festival of raunch and absurdity (the movie features aroused donkeys, deviated septum jokes, and digitally-enhanced body hair, among other items of questionable taste). It only takes a quick comparison with Jim Carrey in Me, Myself & Irene or Jack Black in Shallow Hal to see what a surprisingly delicate balance that is. The Heartbreak Kid may not be quite as wildly sublime as There's Something About Mary, but it comes extremely close, with kudos to Akerman for her unrestrained nuttiness. --Bret Fetzer

You Don't Mess With the Zohan (Unrated + BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review

I can't believe how much I enjoyed You Don't Mess With the Zohan.

I went in fully expecting a typical Adam Sandler movie (you know, the kind where he just plays a stupid main character who's too goofy for his own good, which results in hit or miss comedy material).

Instead, this is quite possibly one of the best movies he ever made. I'm seriously shocked right now.

Furthermore, this movie almost has an epic feel to it. The movie is bigger, more "complex" (by comedy standards) and funnier than I EVER would've imagined.

I won't lie to you though- it might take a few minutes to warm up to Adam Sandler's character. Sometimes his accent isn't always clear, and other times it's just downright sloppy and unbelievable. Still, give the story time to develop, and you should be in for a really good time.

Probably not as good as the Waterboy though, but this movie comes OH so close to matching the greatness of that one.

Some of the scenes that brought a smile to my face, or downright made me laugh like a school girl-

- the scene where Adam's character was "feeling up" his customers at the hair salon and treating the older ladies like they were young and extremely attractive. He would constantly hit on the ladies with his inappropriate words. After that, Adam's character would take them to the back room of the salon and... you know!

- he was playing a game where he was bouncing a cat with the top of his feet, similar to things ball players tend to do while warming up, haha.

- the part where he was peeing in the litter box was golden!

- making a little child cry when he said that the boys veins would probably be accidentally cut if the boy didn't sit still for a haircut, lol

- swimming like a professional while chasing a guy on a jet ski

- playing pinball with a grenade

- constantly saying inappropriate things to Americans, and the people sort of forgiving him because of his accent and where he's from

- tying people into knots by folding their arms and legs, haha

- fighting a group of bad guys in super speed fast motion. similar to this scene would be the one where he drank a bottle of yellow liquid in a matter of two seconds after being hesitant if he should drink it or not

This was just a really funny movie. I can't believe I don't remember any advertisements running for it on television.

If You Don't Mess with the Zohan feels like an extended and crazed sketch from Saturday Night Live, there are reasons for that. Zohan's star and SNL alumnus Adam Sandler is joined by several fellow cast members (in uncredited cameo roles) from his years on the NBC show. But Sandler also co-wrote the film's absurdist script with SNL veteran writer and sometime-performer Robert Smigel. Echoes of a few of their classic skits on the show--built around high-strung Israeli characters obsessed with disco and selling junk electronics out of a New York shop--are in revisited in Zohan and are a lot of fun to see again. Zohan is unbridled nonsense thrown at the wall, but with a sunny disposition that proves surprisingly persuasive. Sandler stars as an Israeli intelligence operative who fakes his death to reinvent himself in New York City as a hairdresser. Putting the lie to assumptions that any man in that professional field must be gay, Zohan routinely provides raucous sexual favors for all of his older female customers. The sight of bottles of gels and hairsprays falling off shelves while the indefatigable Zohan pleasures randy grannies on the other side of a salon wall is pure SNL, and is funnier than it might sound. The silly story involves an old, Palestinian enemy of Zohan, the Phantom (John Turturro), showing up in Manhattan, but everything is really leading to a Big Apple version of the resolution of Israeli-Palestinian conflicts we'd all like to see on a large scale. The film is almost instantly forgettable, and there are many times it veers toward the dumb, but it also sells itself well as a nutty concept. --Tom Keogh
