Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review

I'd never actually heard of this movie before seeing it on the shelf one day. I've always quite liked actor Michael Cera in the TV series Arrested Development and in other movies such as Superbad, so I thought I'd give it a go. I had never heard of the other actors in the film but they all play their parts really well as does Cera who granted does play a very similar nice and a bit nerdy guy character to his one in Superbad and other movies. This is a nice simple story, based on the same titled young adult novel by Rachel Cohn. We have a depressed Nick (Cera) not quite facing reality that his ex girlfriend Triss (Alexis Dziena), has dumped him, isn't a very nice person and isn't interested in the latest mixed burnt CD he has made for her. His best friends who he also plays in a band with are as loyal as any friends can ever be and want him to come play a gig with them to get over Triss. Oh did I mention the band has no drummer. Anyway by pure coincidence Nick's favourite band Where's Fluffy, an underground band that only ever plays spontaneous secret gigs is rumoured to be making an appearance in a club somewhere in New York. So with the enticement of tracking down and seeing the elusive Where's Fluffy, Nick decides to play the gig.

Unbeknownst to Nick, Norah (Kat Dennings), a fellow student in his ex's school and victim of her bullying, has been saving those burnt CDs Triss has been ridiculing and throwing in the bin. She is also a fan of Where's Fluffy and hopes to track down them down with her friend Caroline (Ari Graynor), who's putting it nicely a bit of a drunk. What follows is a film with a lot of funny moments, and demonstrations of absolute loyalty and friendship amongst Norah and Caroline as well as Nick and his band/friends. Where Nick and Norah's relationship ends up is a bit predictable yes, but the fun is in getting there! The drunk Caroline provides quite a few laughs as well, and incidentally if you don't think the gum thing would happen in real life then you're probably not old enough to be in nightclubs and such where you often see drunks do a lot worse and stupid things than that. A great character who doesn't have any lines but provides a lot of funny moments and is also the often mistaken for a taxi by drunks, is the yellow Yugo which is Nick's car.

This is a fun feel good film, check it out!

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Overview

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a comedy about two people thrust together for one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late-night living, and, live, loud music. Nick (Michael Cera) frequents New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah (Kat Dennings) is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common except for their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band's secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications

In the big-screen version of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan's popular young adult novel, two high-school seniors fall in love over the course of one eventful evening. A straight bass player in a queercore band, Nick (Juno's Michael Cera) has just been dumped by the two-timing Tris (Alexis Dziena). He's committed to making more self-pitying mix CDs until his bandmates convince him to help track down a top-secret rock concert. Meanwhile, Norah (Charlie Bartlett's Kat Dennings) and her hard-partying pal, Caroline (Ari Graynor), set off on the same journey. Nora had never met Nick, but she already had a crush on him (While attending the same school as Tris, she's been enjoying the mixes Nick keeps making--and Tris keeps throwing away). When the inebriated Caroline goes missing, they spend the rest of the night racing around the Lower East Side in his Yugo looking for the friend, the show, and trying to avoid Tris (Norah's ex-boyfriend, Tal (Tropic Thunder's Jay Baruchel), presents further complications). Peter Sollett's follow-up to Raising Victor Vargas aims to please several audiences at once. It starts out like a less dirty-minded Superbad, morphs into a post-millennial After Hours, and ends as a Big Apple take on Before Sunset. It's sweet and funny, but could use more of its own identity, though Cera and Dennings make for an appealing couple and the supporting performers, especially Graynor and Kevin Corrigan in a wordless cameo, enhance the proceedings considerably. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Zombie Strippers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]

Zombie Strippers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review

I admit I had very low expectations from Zombie Strippers. I have recently seen a lot of bad attempts at horror-comedy, such as the atrocious Splatter Beach, and I expected no better from Zombie Strippers. To my surprise, it was funny, and gory, and had decent acting (far above par for the genre), and good writing, and the special effects were inventive and well done. In fact, the only thing that prevents it from being classified along with such classics like Evil Dead and Re-Animator is that there is no single standout performance (like Bruce Campbell or Jeffrey Combs). But really, that's a faint criticism. Zombie Strippers is probably the best campy horror movie I have seen in quite a while, and the best horror comedy I have seen in a very, very long time.

Zombie Strippers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Overview

The world's most famous adult film star, Jenna Jameson stars in this thrilling zombie adventure. In the not too distant future a secret government re-animation chemo-virus gets released into conservative Sartre, Nebraska and lands in an underground strip club. As the virus begins to spread, turning the strippers into "Super Zombie Strippers" the girls struggle with whether or not to conform to the new "fad" even if it means there's no turning back. They're not just strippers...They're Zombie Strippers !!

Zombie Strippers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Get yourself a snappy title and a couple of marquee names (however disreputable) and you might just snag your no-budget movie a national release--as Zombie Strippers colorfully proves. The names in question belong to porn star Jenna Jameson and Freddie Krueger himself, Robert Englund, both of whom look quite comfortable in this sleazy milieu. As the title suggests (well, "suggests" might be a mild word), there has been an outbreak of the undead in a strip club, with strippers actually improving their onstage antics after they've become zombies. (Given the number of implants on display, it's a wonder the zombies didn't keel over from silicone poisoning.) Englund is the proprietor of the place, Jameson is a star dancer, and a couple of actresses in the "nice girl" roles don't have to take their tops off, although almost everybody else does. Writer-director Jay Lee fills the movie with political gags and a bunch of philosophy references (Jameson reads Nietzsche, the locale is Sartre, Nebraska), all of which play like a lame attempt to distinguish his movie as something other than a puerile horror-comedy. Only thing is, when you try to disguise the fact that you've made a puerile horror-comedy, it kind of takes the oomph out of both the horror and the comedy. The political jibes are about as feeble as those in Southland Tales, but at least Zombie Strippers is shorter. Shot on video, it looks atrocious, but perhaps that doesn't matter very much. --Robert Horton

The Omen Collection [Blu-ray]

The Omen Collection [Blu-ray] Review

It's Halloween time so I've been watching more horror then usual, which isn't saying much, and I've watching as much new horror as old ones. I recently purchased the Blu Ray version of The Omen series. It's a four disc set that includes The Omen, Damien: The Omen II, The Final Conflict: The Omen III, and The Omen remake(2006). Nope, for some reason this Blu Ray box set didn't include the fourth Omen picture, which you can buy seperately on DVD, and did come in the DVD version of The Omen box set. I seriously doubt anyone in their right mind will be crying in their sleep over this ommission. Sure, if it was included I woudn't have minded, and I might even have popped it in to watch it once more for posterities sake, but I'm okay if I never have the chance to see it again. It's a pretty bad, Showtime Original Movie. But I did hear that if the TV movie had done better Showtime had planned on producing an Omen TV series. Oh well, maybe it's all for the best based on the final result of The Omen IV: The Awakening. For the first three Omen pictures the special features are all the same. The Omen actually gets a couple of new special features. One being a new, third commentary track with film historians including screenwriter Lem Dobbs(The Fugitive). This new commentary focus's heavily on Jerry Goldsmith's score and the films general influences before and after it was made. We also get a new picture in picture feature that most Blu Rays seem to have. The second and third film only come with the previous release's trailers and commentaries. The remake disc is the same as the previous DVD release, but for some reason it ommitts one of the DVD release's special featurette's Omenisms. Why, I don't know. I thought Blu Ray not only made the sound and picture better but also could hold more info on a single disc then DVD. Whatever.

THE OMEN(1976): This is a landmark horror film. It, along with Jaws and The Exorcist, help knock Roger Corman and Hammer films out of their markets. Hollywood took an interst in making genre pictures, films that Corman and Hammer had been doing forever, and doing them on a grand scale with known actors and movie stars. This film stars Gregor Peck(limited range but great imposing, quiet screen presence), Lee Remick(underrated, never got the credit she deserved in her short career) David Warner(c'mon, if you're a genre fan you know this guy, and if you don't you should be ashamed of yourself). This film isn't particularly frightening honestly, but it's very entertaining and exciting. The performances are all grounded and the direction is very stylish but restrained in the vein of Hitchcock. Richard Donner had directed every Tv show known to man at this point in his career(everything ranging from Maverick, Gilligans Island and Wild, Wild West). This was the film that legitimised him and its success led him to getting the gig of directing Superman: The movie. On his commentary track, he has two--one with editor Stuart Baird and one with screenwriter/director Brian Helgeland, he states that the trick to The Omen working is that he never thought the child was the actual son of Satan. He directed it as if everything in the film was just horrible coincidence, an the guilt of Gregory Peck's character over lying to his wife about the baby swap influences what he thinks and his sanity. It's a smart move. It keeps the film honest and not over the top. Apparently, the original screenplay by David Seltzer(wront John Frankenheimer's underrated horror film The Prophecy) had demon creatures popping into the film. The film also has a dark sense of humor in its grand gugnol, Rube Goldberg inspired death scenes. The most famous being how David Warner's head loses touch with his body. The disc also has retrospective documentaries, interviews one on one with David Seltzer and Richard Donner, and most intersting, a one on one with the late great composer Jerry Goldsmith----who one his only Academy Award for his score in this film. There's also pictures and stills, and the trailers. A very good loaded package and if you didn't like the other films this set up would keep you busy for at least a day.
5 out of 5 stars.

DAMIEN: THE OMEN II: Oh boy, what a terrible movie, and an even worse sequel! Not only is this sequel a pale imitation, it's really boring. Omen producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the story for this sequel and it was rushed into production. Sure, the deaths, espeically one involving an elevator, are more elaborate, but so what? Richard Donner's The Omen was so much more then gruesome death scenes. This sequel seemed to only latch onto that aspect of the original. The only neat thing this sequel does is set up where Damien is going in the future and alludes to what Satan's ultimate plan might be. The disc has the trailer and a commentary track by writer/producer Harvey Bernhard. Haven't listened to it as I don't care, but one of these days I might give it a spin. Jerry Goldsmith returns to score the film and supply it with its only admirable trait. There are scenes in this film involving attacking ravens that are too hyterical to describe and may be worth watching this film for some unintentional humor.
2 out of 5 stars.

THE FINAL CONFLICT: THE OMEN III: Yes, we're back on track, and it's no surprise as Richard Donner returns to this franchise in an executive producer capacity. We finally move away from the evil child aspect that was beyond played out anc cliche'd by the time this third installment reached multiplex's. Sam Neil plays the adult version of Damien Thorn, in one of his first leading film roles. He is very good in this film. His portrayal keeps you glued to the screen. The actual character of Damien has never really been fleshed out in the previous installments. He was just kind of there and almost an innocent bystander to what was going on around him. At the end of part II we get to see him sort of accept his role. This film plays that to full effect and adds in all the politics and corporate endeavors you would assume the Devil would want to be involved in. The film has the style back from the original, and so sorrowfully lacking int he second. The ending is sort of abstract and with the new characterization of Damien has a bit of tragedy in it and it totally works even if it's mostly on an abstract level. Like the second film this one only comes with the trailer and a comentary track by the director.
4 out of 5 stars

THE OMEN(2006): Ah, in the decade of the remake did you really think that The Omen would be ammune? No way! The Omen dented into the subculture's zeitgeist and became a brand name, so this was perfect remake to have on your hands, especially if you want to assure you make some undeserved dough off of it. Though, out of the many remakes in the last ten years this one isn't awful. Though, that may have to do with the fact that it follows the original very closely. Hell, even the remake script was written, or rather re-written, by the original's writer David Seltzer. There are some obvious modifications in this remake. First off, Damien seems to be more aware of his evil. The way he is directed and played in this remake is more as a malevolent presence then the cute innocent in the original. In the first film we were never sure how much Damien knew until the last shot of him smiling as the film's closing. In this film director John Moore(Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne) tips us off pretty early that Damien is aware of his destiny. The scene in the car when the Thorn's are on the way to the wedding Church, after Damien's freak out, Damien glares at his mother played by Julia Styles. Also, there scene in the monkey house(a riff on the safari trail scene in the original involving some very mad babboons) Damien glares at the animals and says, "They're afraid of me", very coldly. Also, the cast is made more age appropriate. I always had trouble with buying Gregory Peck as a new father to be. Liev Streiber takes over for Peck in this remake and does very well. He gives a very intricate and subtle peformance in this film. He helps keep the itnerest invested the whole time. Julia Styles does well too. She grounds her character. Mrs. Thorn is changed in the remake. She seems to doubt her son sooner and their relationship seems more combative. The final and most major change this remake does is the fact that it opens with the Vatican already expecting the arrival of the AntiChrist. They look on counting the signs or omens, if you will, of the coming of the apocalypse. Though, how tasteful showing and using imagery of 9-11 in a fluffy horror film like this is up for debate. Personally, it made me uncomfortable, but I understood what the filmmakers were trying to do. They were justifying their remake by making it relevant to the modern times. It's only half successful. The problem with this remake is that it's too much like the orignal. If you've seen the '76 version you'll get nothing new or exciting out of this remake. Yes, the acting is all quite good from Styles, Streiver to the supporting cast which includes Michael Gambon, Pete Postelwaite, David Thewlis, and the scene stealer Mia Farrow as nanny Ms. Blaylock. Farrow takes a different approach by playing Blaylock as a Stepford nanny, all smiles with something brewing beneath. Good casting, cool change, and very fun. Also, director John Moore over directs every scene like he's doing a big Bruckheimer action film as opposed to a Gothic horror yarn. All the death scenes are ramped up and over produced so they lack effect and just become spectacle on the level of the later Final Destination films.
3 out of 5 films.

So, this set is worth having. The picture is brilliant and the sound is even better. You get a decent amount of extras, especially on the first and best film, and you'll never feel compelled to sit through the ommitted fourth film. You get two really good films, one bad one, and one mediocre one. As much as I don't care for the sequel and the remake I will watch them each again so for me it's worth it. Happy Halloween and good luck at the next Saw film. My fingers are crossed.....

Caddyshack [Blu-ray]

Caddyshack [Blu-ray] Review

Hilarious, one of the greatest comedies ever made, Rodney Dangerfield is the greatest, you will love this movie everytime you see it, never gets old, these were the days when comedy was at some of it's truest from, now it is all bathroom humor and too raunchy, it just goes too far nowadays. If you buy this movie, you will love and always get enjoyment out it, truly a classic.

Caddyshack [Blu-ray] Overview

A purely tasteless, moronic, guilty pleasure. Director HaroldRamis employs a mixture of Mad magazine/National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramis just lets his colorful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically re-creating his crude standup routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favorites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. --Dave McCoy

The Italian Job [Blu-ray]

The Italian Job [Blu-ray] Review

If the Actors and Crew had as much fun making this film, as I had watching this film, they may have done it for free.

This film is seriously serious, as well as seriously funny and in both cases, they are seriously wonderful. There is a fortune in gold ingots stolen once, stolen twice and on it's way to a third (I'm sure the Russians weren't happy with their payoff).

The Actors play professional master theives who lost the fortune once, along with the death of the gang's mastermind. The rest of the gang, plus the victims daughter, join forces to take back their stolen bounty and seek revenge for the murder of thier beloved leader by an ex-gang member.

The final chase scenes are spectacular, but you don't have to wait till then. You can certainly start enjoying this film from the absolute start.

The Italian Job [Blu-ray] Overview

The plan was flawless. The execution was perfect. Charlie Croker pulled off the crime of a lifetime. The one thing that, he didn't plan on was being double-crossed. Now he wants more than the job's payoff...he wants payback. Mark Wahlberg is electrifying as Croker in this "fast and furious action-adventure."* Along with a drop-dead gorgeous safecracker (Charlize Theron), Croker and his team take off to re-steal the loot and end up in a pulse-pounding, pedal-to-the-metal chase that careens up, down, above and below the streets of Los Angeles. With an ensemble all-star cast that also includes Edward Norton, Seth Green, Jason Statham, Mos Def, Franky G and Donald Sutherland, The Italian Job is "Hot!"

The Italian Job [Blu-ray] Specifications

Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers play a pivotal role in director F. Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --Jeff Shannon

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

Fans of "Dirty Dancing" seem to get hooked on it, and if you're like me, there's no such thing as watching it too many times. There's a reason why this sleeper took off, and has remained a staple in the coming-of-age genre since its release.

This film remains my personal favorite, and the 20th Anniversary Edition has it all in terms of what was going on behind the scenes, screen tests, different versions of some of the scenes, some with additional footage that was edited out, as well as scenes that were not included in the film. The extra information on this edition highlights what it took to come up with the final version of the film, and watching the extra footage enhances our understanding of the characters we've loved, as well as the story, while showcasing the expertise of the editors in knowing what to leave out. It's an engaging, entertaining view of what gave us the final version of "Dirty Dancing" that has endured.

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

The summer of 1963 innocent 17-year-old Baby (Grey) vacations with her parents at a Catskill's resort. One evening she is drawn to the staff quarters by stirring music. There she meets Johnny, the hotel dance instructor, who is as experienced as Baby is naive. Baby soon becomes Johnny's pupil in dance and love.

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it, Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey) has been vacationing in the Catskills with her family for many years. Uneventfully. One summer, she falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world. Baby's father, Jake (Law and Order's Jerry Orbach), can't see the basic decency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to find that Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake.

Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series, and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma, and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie with occasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a corner!"--that nonetheless carries an underlying message about tolerance and is filled with the kind of exuberant spirit that's hard for even the most cynical to resist. Not that they'd ever admit it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Brothers Bloom [Blu-ray]

The Brothers Bloom [Blu-ray] Review

I see from Box Office Mojo that this wonderful creation from the mind of writer/director Rian Johnson made a disappointing .5m in (US) domestic business. That's a shame - this is a really enjoyable, smart, stylish movie that is a wicked blend of drama and comedy. It blows me away that this most inventive of films sprung from one man's fertile mind. My plan is to go back and rent Johnson's debut film, Brick, a favorite of many a movie-watcher.

Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz are three actors to whom I give the benefit of the doubt: I'll watch a movie they are in simply because they'd had the judgment to be in it. Mark Ruffalo, for example, isn't going to up suddenly and get in a film that has him clambering onto a hurtling asteroid to save the planet Earth. He's in quality projects. And Rachel Weisz is like Tina Fey: a sex symbol for those whose lips don't move when they read. She's never been more adorable than she is here - most notably in a hilarious sequence in which she displays to Brody all the things she's learned while holed up in her mansion over the years: languages; ping-pong; classical piano; rap (over-the-top goofy); break-dancing; karate; juggling (on stilts with chainsaws no less)...you name it. As Brody's character warns his scheming older brother (Ruffalo) a couple of times: "She knows _lots_ of things." Brody's character is meant to find Weisz's Penelope irresistible. And, she is. In spades.

How smart is Johnson's script? Smart enough where he could conjure up and act on this thought: "Gee, I'd really like to get Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) into my movie even though she speaks not a word of English." Thus, he writes the character of 'Bang-Bang.' I guarantee you he wrote that part thinking "I'm putting Rinko Kikuchi in my movie," not "Hmmm...who's going to play 'Bang-Bang'?". Her almost-wordless appearance - save a couple of epigrams and one karaoke routine - is a shtick that never gets old.

The deleted scenes on the DVD are well-worth watching with Johnson's commentary turned-on. It makes you more fully appreciate just how much thought he put into this under-appreciated gem.

The Brothers Bloom [Blu-ray] Specifications

Writer-director Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom has a lot going for it, like an excellent cast doing good work, fabulous locations, a sumptuous look, and some interesting ideas in a genre that’s rife with possibilities. Somehow, though, the film is a whole that’s less than the sum of its parts. We meet siblings Stephen and Bloom, the products of numerous foster homes, at ages 13 and 10, respectively, as they’re starting to develop the skills and savvy that will help them become the full-blown scam-meisters they are when we meet up with them in their thirties (with Mark Ruffalo taking over as Stephen and Adrien Brody as Bloom). It seems Bloom wants to pack it in and live "an unwritten life" free of his brother’s elaborate schemes. But Stephen, who is now accompanied by a sidekick named Bang Bang (Babel’s Rinko Kikuchi, in an amusing, mostly silent performance as what Stephen refers to as "our fifth Beatle"), convinces his younger brother to take part in one last swindle, this one targeting the filthy rich Penelope Stamp (Rachel Weisz), who lives alone in what’s described as the biggest house on the eastern seaboard. Penelope’s an oddball, to say the least, having overcome a sickly childhood and become a master hobbyist whose skills rage from origami and playing six or eight instruments to riding a unicycle while balancing two chainsaws. Posing as antiquities dealers, the brothers pull her into a scheme that takes the trio all over the world (Greece, Prague, Montenegro, St. Petersburg, Mexico). Needless to say, complications ensue. Penelope turns out to be pretty good at the con game herself; what’s more, we know from the moment Stephen warns Bloom not to fall in love with her that he’ll quickly do exactly that. For sure, The Brothers Bloom has its high points, with surreal touches and amusing moments that help counterbalance its fairly arch overall tone. But in the end, it feels as if Johnson is trying too hard, sacrificing character for cleverness, and it’s the audience--even those who enjoy and are adept at sorting through the various clues and red herrings to figure out what’s supposedly really happening--that feels conned, or at least finds it difficult to care. --Sam Graham

August Rush [Blu-ray]

August Rush [Blu-ray] Review

For someone who loves romantic movies, this movie certainly delivers. I loved it, I simply loved it and I can't say it any clearer than that. I wanted to feel good, I wanted to feel joyful, I wanted to feel that magical something that I can't really explain and this movie gave it to me. The plot, the actors, the music, the journey is just right for me.

Here it is nearly 1:00 a.m. and I am so alert. Really I feel energized with that kind of "you can do it" energy. I love when a movie gives me something positive. It's like a sort of nourishment.

I've just finished watching this movie and I feel like I can watch it all over again. I am uplifted, energized, hopeful, creative, and just filled with something that is inspiring and encouraging. For some, what I say will sound hokey or whatever, but hokey people like me love this kind of movie. The kind that is alright to share with the entire family. Gosh, did this movie make me feel great. I simply loved it.

August Rush [Blu-ray] Overview

There’s music in the wind and sky. Can you hear it? And there’s hope. Can you feel it? The boy called August Rush can. The music mysteriously draws him, penniless and alone, to New York City in a quest to find – somehow, someway – the parents separated from him years earlier. And along the way he may also find the musical genius hidden within him. Experience the magic of this rhapsodic epic of the heart starring Freddie Highmore (as August), Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Terrence Howard and Robin Williams. "I believe in music the way some people believe in fairy tales," August says. Open your heart and listen. You’ll believe, too.

August Rush [Blu-ray] Specifications

Music has long been considered a universal language with the power to bring people together, but can the simple act of playing music possibly unite a child with a mother and father who live in two different cities and don't even know of the child's existence? Having shared one extraordinary night, classical cellist Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and Irish singer and songwriter Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) were a union meant to be that was torn apart by circumstances and a protective father (William Sadler). After eleven years, both Lyla and Louis have given up performing only to find that they are unhappy and searching for a sense of fulfillment that will ultimately lead both artists back to music and performing. Evan (Freddie Highmore) is an 11-year old orphan who's grown up hearing music in everything around him and is convinced that his real parents want him and will find him with the help of music. Driven by his innate musical genius and a powerful compulsion to perform before the world, Evan runs away from the orphanage and is initially taken in by a street man known as Wizard (Robin Williams) who encourages his musical talent and renames him August Rush and, later, by a local priest who arranges for August to receive a Julliard education. August is a child prodigy who excels beyond even the wildest expectations and earns the opportunity of a lifetime--a chance to perform in front of an enormous audience in New York's Central Park. The question is; can his performance possibly reach the audience August really craves? While elements of this film are completely unbelievable (take August's instant prowess on the guitar or his immediate and sophisticated grasp of musical notation and musical theory), the message of the universality of music and the notion that "the music is all around us, all you have to do is listen" is both compelling and powerful. --Tami Horiuchi

Collateral Damage [Blu-ray]

Collateral Damage [Blu-ray] Review

Yes, another typical Arnold Schwarnegger film which translates to (a) interesting all the way; (b) very violent; (c) very far-fetched. Here, Arnold is just a plain old fireman but he turns into superhero, doing things only Superman or Batman could accomplish....but it's still fun to watch.

After seeing his wife and kid blown up by Columbian terrorists, Arnold goes after the latter, traveling to the jungles of that South American country and taking them on! In the end, he's in Washington trying to diffuse another terrorist plot. He's amazing. What CAN'T this guy do? Yes, it's ludicrous....but it's not meant to be taken seriously, folks! It's just entertainment for fans of action movies, nothing more.

There is a nice twist at the end of this story and it involves a very intriguing-looking woman, Francesco Neri. I just love that woman's face. She's also in "Hannibal" but I think the rest of her films are Italian. I would like to see more of her work.

There are also some short appearances by two always-entertaining actors, John Turturro and John Leguizimo. Scharwarznegger's action films usually have a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek humor and those two actors help along those lines in this film.

Overall, it's two hours of good escapist fare.

Collateral Damage [Blu-ray] Overview

Surging excitement and one-man heroics fuel this powerful action thriller from the director of The Fugitive and Under Siege. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a fireman whose wife and child are killed in a terrorist bombing and who obsessively tracks the mastermind (Cliff Curtis) behind it, from Los Angeles to Colombia to Washington, DC. The fanatic plans to strike again in Washington…but how? When? Where? In the scramble for answers, one thing is clear: Collateral Damage is a ticking time bomb of suspense.

Collateral Damage [Blu-ray] Specifications

Arnold Schwarzenegger's loyal fans get what they want in this routine but rousing revenge thriller, which pits the aging action star against a Colombian guerrilla terrorist. Schwarzenegger plays a Los Angeles fireman who witnesses the killing of his wife and young son, caused by the terrorist's bombing in a crowded L.A. pavilion. Despite intense scrutiny by FBI and CIA officials, Arnie infiltrates the terrorist's remote jungle compound, enlists the aid of the villain's seemingly trustworthy wife (Francesca Neri), and plots to foil another bombing in Washington, D.C. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) maintains adequate plausibility even when Schwarzenegger's survival grows absurdly unlikely, and lively roles for John Turturro and John Leguizamo add welcomed spice to the movie's impressive display of military ordnance. Despite its formulaic plot and Arnold's advancing seniority, Collateral Damage still manages to pack an entertaining punch. --Jeff Shannon
