an initiate to brakhage by every means, only because of criterion have i heard of this and waited for the two volume set to actually start watching. some of the shorts have proven to be a bit elusive in meaning so i've been watching the interviews to get a sense of what brakhage was trying to get at. the supplements are just as mind blowing as the films they are about.

i've been one to put on music while watching movies, with the volume down(pink floyd and wizard of oz is purely coincidental). this collection of mostly silent films has practically provoked me to do so. i've been playing autechre's oversteps,delirium cordia from fantomas, secret chiefs 3's satellite supersonicI, and mike ladd's bedford park while watching. further combinations are imminent... or impending.

i had no idea people would like stuff like this, much less make an abundance of material like this. i know how i ended up "like this" but how deep it relates to these meanings is slightly beyond reach-partially unattainable. i understand this review may not be very helpful, so teh more teh no votes teh better teh troll me with. atleast i waited till i had it in my hands and had seen the actual product you pre-release review-crybabies. TROLL RIGHT!!!

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray] Review

This DVD has a great collection of the Pixar shorts. Many of the shorts help show how far Pixar has come and how creative they are. 'Presto' and 'For The Birds' alone make this DVD worth having. The chess game short (don't remember the title) is boring, so I usually skip it. It would have received 5 stars from me, but the price is a bit excessive. Most places I have seen it sell it for .00 +. Many of the Pixar full length movies don't sell for that much. If you don't mind the high price, it is a good collection of family friendly cartoons.

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray] Specifications

Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in "Geri's Game" and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in "Boundin'." This is Bruce Willis' defining collection, The Die Hard Tetralogy. As a huge Bruce Willis fan I was very excited to get this because it's a 4-disc set of his greatest movies ever. I really don't have a favorite movie because this is a very rarely collection, in that each film is as good as the last/next.

Each disc includes a TON of extras, too. Each movie/disc includes trailers, featurettes, movies, documentaries, interviews, bonus clips and alternate endings. I especially enjoyed the "Die Hard With a Vengeance" alternate ending. It was so funny and so different from how the movie actually ended.

All of the movies look pristine in 1080p blu-ray. I never saw Bruce look or sound so great. This includes 'lossless audio' as well as 'smart menu technology' (the ability to use the menu while the movie is up on the screen).

This comes packaged in a standard blu ray case and the size of this 4-disc collection is roughly the size of 1 standard DVD. Isn't that cool? Each disc includes a color silkscreen picture of Bruce from that particular movie, as well.

I understand Bruce is in negotiations to make "Die Hard 5" and can only imagine that it will be just as exciting and thrilling as these 4 movies are. If you have any interest in action, adventure and even comedy you must get this set.

Die Hard is the movie franchise that made a movie star out of TV star Bruce Willis, and created an entire action-movie genre of its own. In the original 1988 film, Willis plays wisecracking New York cop John McClane, who arrives at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles to meet up with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonny Bedelia), at her office Christmas party. As luck would have it, the company ends up in the middle of a terrorist plot led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his gang of expert killers, and with little help coming from outside, McClane has to pick off his enemies one by one. Thus was born the "Die Hard genre," epitomized by such films as Under Siege ("Die Hard on a ship"), Passenger 57 ("Die Hard on a plane"), Speed ("Die Hard on a bus"), and Cliffhanger ("Die Hard on a mountain"). But few measure up to the explosive brilliance of Die Hard. Director John McTiernan develops the action at a fast and furious pace, culminating in some fantastic set-pieces on the top of the building, in the elevator shaft, and in the building's outer plaza. Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza's script, based on Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, is smart, funny, and full of memorable lines (among them "Welcome to the party, pal!" and of course "Yippee ki-ay, motherf*****"), and the cast is perfection, especially Rickman as the cunningly evil villain, and Willis, whose McClane character--bloodied, beaten, bruised, and barely breathing, as he battles both bad guys and bureaucrats--is someone audiences could genuinely cheer for.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the 1990 sequel, Die Hard 2 (unofficially referred to as Die Harder), doesn't match the level of the original, but it's still an exciting thrill ride with some terrific action sequences. One year after the Nakatomi incident, McClane (Willis) is awaiting his wife's (Bedelia) plane to arrive at Dulles Airport when he stumbles onto a plot to paralyze the entire airport, including all the planes trying to land. It's up to McClane to take on the cadre of bad guys despite all the bureaucrats standing in his way, and before the planes run out of fuel and crash to the ground. The cast includes William Sadler as rogue military man Col. Stuart, Dennis Franz as the latest bureaucratic cop to get in McClane's way, Richard Thornburg as the annoying reporter from the original movie, John Amos as a special-forces commander, early-in-their-career John Leguizamo and Robert Patrick as terrorists, and future politician and Law and Order actor Fred Thompson as the head of air traffic control.

The third film in the series, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), was again directed by John McTiernan and uses a different concept. The villain (played by Jeremy Irons) claims to have planted bombs all over New York City and gives John McClane (Willis), now alchoholic and separated, a series of clues to try to track them down. Along the way, he's aided by, and eventually teams up with, a Harlem shopkeeper named Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson). The interplay between Willis and Jackson is engaging, but better suited to the Lethal Weapon franchise it was previously considered for, and not till the end does the movie return to the familiar McClane-vs.-villains-showdown format.

Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, a.k.a. the "Apple guy") who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses.

Live Free or Die Hard uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humor, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. There was some controversy over the film's PG-13 rating--there might be less blood than usual, and McClane's famous tag line is somewhat obscured--but there's still has plenty of action and a high body count. M (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Review

It was a tough decision to shell out .00 for M on BLU-RAY when I already owned the excellent Criterion edition on DVD. The deciding factor was that I just had to see the english language version, anticipating, above all else, a different version of Lorre's remarkable performance in the kangaroo court. Well, I don't regret the splurge, but the english version isn't anything to write home about. It is almost entirely the same material that is in the german language version but large parts have been cut up and then reassembled badly. Almost every scene is dubbed, as opposed to re-filmed in english, and some of the dubbing is very poorly done. Very few of the dry, brittish voice actors manage to match the energy of the german actors they are voicing for. The only scenes I spotted as being re-filmed were a very few in the kangaroo court in which Lorre was the only person on the screen. Any scenes in which he interacts with other actors are dubbed. (Although I wasn't sure about some of the scenes with he and his lawyer.) And sadly, the new, english scenes of Lorre's amazing monologues seemed shorter and more poorly written than their german equivilents and his performances not nearly so affecting or believable. (There is also a new scene tacked on to the end of the film. The german version ends with the mothers of some of Lorre's victims admonishing us all to keep close watch over our children. This is cut from the english and replaced with a new scene of children in a circle around a little girl, which mirrors the opening scene of the film. In the opening scene the girl is sing-chanting a song about serial killers. In the new, english ending the girl is now chanting "Eenie meenie minie moe, catch a n***** by the toe.", which is rather baffling and kind of funny.)
Other than these problems, many of which are typical of any but the most skillfully dubbed films, it is rather self defeating to cut up the soundtrack of a film in which the sound plays such an important role. It was the first german talkie, and Lang's use of the new medium was innovative and unique even by today's standards. In many places, environmental sounds which are vital aspects of the narrative, are completely cut out so that english words can be added. Lang's use of sound in this film is, in fact, so very calculated, (sometimes minimalist) that even small changes can greatly diminish the effect. I am however, glad to have this version as I always gain something from seeing alternate versions of great films. But if Criterion wanted to give us a real treat, they would include the rarely seen, 1951 remake with David Wayne and Raymond Burr which is surprisingly good, as remakes go. Maybe they could get me to shell out again for a comprehensive M box set.

A simple, haunting musical phrase whistled offscreen tells us that a young girl will be killed. "Who is the Murderer?" pleads a nearby placard as serial killer Hans Beckert, played by Peter Lorre (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon), closes in on little Elsie Beckmann. In his harrowing masterwork M, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse) merges trenchant social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller.

Peter Lorre made film history with his startling performance as a psychotic murderer of children. Too elusive for the Berlin police, the killer is sought and marked by underworld criminals who are feeling the official fallout for his crimes. This riveting, 1931 German drama by Fritz Lang--an early talkie--unfolds against a breathtakingly expressionistic backdrop of shadows and clutter, an atmosphere of predestination that seems to be closing in on Lorre's terrified villain. M is an important piece of cinema's past along with a number of Lang's early German works, including Metropolis and Spies. (Lang eventually brought his influence directly to the American cinema in such films as Fury, They Clash by Night, and The Big Heat.) M shouldn't be missed. This original 111-minute version is a little different from what most people have seen in theaters. --Tom Keogh

The Omen Collection [Blu-ray] Review

It's Halloween time so I've been watching more horror then usual, which isn't saying much, and I've watching as much new horror as old ones. I recently purchased the Blu Ray version of The Omen series. It's a four disc set that includes The Omen, Damien: The Omen II, The Final Conflict: The Omen III, and The Omen remake(2006). Nope, for some reason this Blu Ray box set didn't include the fourth Omen picture, which you can buy seperately on DVD, and did come in the DVD version of The Omen box set. I seriously doubt anyone in their right mind will be crying in their sleep over this ommission. Sure, if it was included I woudn't have minded,and I might even have popped it in to watch it once more for posterities sake, but I'm okay if I never have the chance to see it again. It's a pretty bad, Showtime Original Movie. But I did hear that if the TV movie had done better Showtime had planned on producing an Omen TV series. Oh well, maybe it's all for the best based on the final result of The Omen IV: The Awakening. For the first three Omen pictures the special features are all the same. The Omen actually gets a couple of new special features. One being a new, third commentary track with film historians including screenwriter Lem Dobbs(The Fugitive). This new commentary focus's heavily on Jerry Goldsmith's score and the films general influences before and after it was made. We also get a new picture in picture feature that most Blu Rays seem to have. The second and third film only come with the previous release's trailers and commentaries. The remake disc is the same as the previous DVD release, but for some reason it ommitts one of the DVD release's special featurette's Omenisms. Why, I don't know. I thought Blu Ray not only made the sound and picture better but also could hold more info on a single disc then DVD. Whatever.

THE OMEN(1976): This is a landmark horror film. It, along with Jaws and The Exorcist, help knock Roger Corman and Hammer films out of their markets. Hollywood took an interst in making genre pictures, films that Corman and Hammer had been doing forever, and doing them on a grand scale with known actors and movie stars. This film stars Gregor Peck(limited range but great imposing, quiet screen presence), Lee Remick(underrated, never got the credit she deserved in her short career) David Warner(c'mon, if you're a genre fan you know this guy, and if you don't you should be ashamed of yourself). This film isn't particularly frightening honestly, but it's very entertaining and exciting. The performances are all grounded and the direction is very stylish but restrained in the vein of Hitchcock. Richard Donner had directed every Tv show known to man at this point in his career(everything ranging from Maverick, Gilligans Island and Wild, Wild West). This was the film that legitimised him and its success led him to getting the gig of directing Superman: The movie. On his commentary track, he has two--one with editor Stuart Baird and one with screenwriter/director Brian Helgeland, he states that the trick to The Omen working is that he never thought the child was the actual son of Satan. He directed it as if everything in the film was just horrible coincidence, an the guilt of Gregory Peck's character over lying to his wife about the baby swap influences what he thinks and his sanity. It's a smart move. It keeps the film honest and not over the top. Apparently, the original screenplay by David Seltzer(wront John Frankenheimer's underrated horror film The Prophecy) had demon creatures popping into the film. The film also has a dark sense of humor in its grand gugnol, Rube Goldberg inspired death scenes. The most famous being how David Warner's head loses touch with his body. The disc also has retrospective documentaries, interviews one on one with David Seltzer and Richard Donner, and most intersting, a one on one with the late great composer Jerry Goldsmith----who one his only Academy Award for his score in this film. There's also pictures and stills, and the trailers. A very good loaded package and if you didn't like the other films this set up would keep you busy for at least a day.

DAMIEN: THE OMEN II: Oh boy, what a terrible movie,and an even worse sequel! Not only is this sequel a pale imitation, it's really boring. Omen producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the story for this sequel and it was rushed into production. Sure, the deaths, espeically one involving an elevator, are more elaborate, but so what? Richard Donner's The Omen was so much more then gruesome death scenes. This sequel seemed to only latch onto that aspect of the original. The only neat thing this sequel does is set up where Damien is going in the future and alludes to what Satan's ultimate plan might be. The disc has the trailer and a commentary track by writer/producer Harvey Bernhard. Haven't listened to it as I don't care, but one of these days I might give it a spin. Jerry Goldsmith returns to score the film and supply it with its only admirable trait. There are scenes in this film involving attacking ravens that are too hyterical to describe and may be worth watching this film for some unintentional humor.

THE FINAL CONFLICT: THE OMEN III: Yes, we're back on track, and it's no surprise as Richard Donner returns to this franchise in an executive producer capacity. We finally move away from the evil child aspect that was beyond played out anc cliche'd by the time this third installment reached multiplex's. Sam Neil plays the adult version of Damien Thorn, in one of his first leading film roles. He is very good in this film. His portrayal keeps you glued to the screen. The actual character of Damien has never really been fleshed out in the previous installments. He was just kind of there and almost an innocent bystander to what was going on around him. At the end of part II we get to see him sort of accept his role. This film plays that to full effect and adds in all the politics and corporate endeavors you would assume the Devil would want to be involved in. The film has the style back from the original, and so sorrowfully lacking int he second. The ending is sort of abstract and with the new characterization of Damien has a bit of tragedy in it and it totally works even if it's mostly on an abstract level. Like the second film this one only comes with the trailer and a comentary track by the director.

THE OMEN(2006): Ah, in the decade of the remake did you really think that The Omen would be ammune? No way! The Omen dented into the subculture's zeitgeist and became a brand name, so this was perfect remake to have on your hands, especially if you want to assure you make some undeserved dough off of it. Though, out of the many remakes in the last ten years this one isn't awful. Though, that may have to do with the fact that it follows the original very closely. Hell, even the remake script was written, or rather re-written, by the original's writer David Seltzer. There are some obvious modifications in this remake. First off, Damien seems to be more aware of his evil. The way he is directed and played in this remake is more as a malevolent presence then the cute innocent in the original. In the first film we were never sure how much Damien knew until the last shot of him smiling as the film's closing. In this film director John Moore(Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne) tips us off pretty early that Damien is aware of his destiny. The scene in the car when the Thorn's are on the way to the wedding Church, after Damien's freak out, Damien glares at his mother played by Julia Styles. Also, there scene in the monkey house(a riff on the safari trail scene in the original involving some very mad babboons) Damien glares at the animals and says, "They're afraid of me", very coldly. Also, the cast is made more age appropriate. I always had trouble with buying Gregory Peck as a new father to be. Liev Streiber takes over for Peck in this remake and does very well. He gives a very intricate and subtle peformance in this film. He helps keep the itnerest invested the whole time. Julia Styles does well too. She grounds her character. Mrs. Thorn is changed in the remake. She seems to doubt her son sooner and their relationship seems more combative. The final and most major change this remake does is the fact that it opens with the Vatican already expecting the arrival of the AntiChrist. They look on counting the signs or omens, if you will, of the coming of the apocalypse. Though, how tasteful showing and using imagery of 9-11 in a fluffy horror film like this is up for debate. Personally, it made me uncomfortable, but I understood what the filmmakers were trying to do. They were justifying their remake by making it relevant to the modern times. It's only half successful. The problem with this remake is that it's too much like the orignal. If you've seen the '76 version you'll get nothing new or exciting out of this remake. Yes, the acting is all quite good from Styles, Streiver to the supporting cast which includes Michael Gambon, Pete Postelwaite, David Thewlis, and the scene stealer Mia Farrow as nanny Ms. Blaylock. Farrow takes a different approach by playing Blaylock as a Stepford nanny, all smiles with something brewing beneath. Good casting, cool change, and very fun. Also, director John Moore over directs every scene like he's doing a big Bruckheimer action film as opposed to a Gothic horror yarn. All the death scenes are ramped up and over produced so they lack effect and just become spectacle on the level of the later Final Destination films.

So, this set is worth having. The picture is brilliant and the sound is even better. You get a decent amount of extras, especially on the first and best film, and you'll never feel compelled to sit through the ommitted fourth film. You get two really good films, one bad one, and one mediocre one. As much as I don't care for the sequel and the remake I will watch them each again so for me it's worth it. Happy Halloween and good luck at the next Saw film. My fingers are crossed.....
