The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi [Blu-ray]

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi [Blu-ray] Review

The classic Japanese character of Zatoichi, the blind swordsman, who has been featured in dozens of films over the past four decades, has been revitalized and brought to the screen by the phenomenally talented Takeshi Kitano (BATTLE ROYALE), who not only stars as the celebrated title character, but also serves as the film's writer and director as well. In THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI, Zatoichi wanders into a small town that is being terrorized by a local gang who are extorting the locals and causing everyone to live in fear. Zatoichi encounters a woman who gives him shelter and he soon befriends her nephew that has a penchant for gambling. The two meet a pair of geishas and learn that they are following their own vendetta of personal vengeance and soon all are engaged in an epic battle against the Yakuza. When the gang leader brings aboard the incredibly skilled ronin Hattori Genosuke (Tadanobu Asano) to serve as his personal bodyguard though, Zatoichi may have finally met his match.

With Kitano's revamped imagining of the Zatoichi legend, audiences are treated to an incredible film that focuses on the subtleties of character as opposed to the broadness of scope that elevates the character into mythological proportions. Kitano's Zatoichi is constantly listening, letting himself become immersed in his surroundings to the point of blending into the background. His mannerisms are comprised of incredibly small and almost delicate movements when in a normal setting, but these are quickly juxtaposed with lightning fast and explosive movements whenever he fights. This dichotomy of movement that Kitano adopts for his Zatoichi is what creates a remarkably fascinating character and is of paramount importance to the centrality of the theme of the movie.

In THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI dualities are explored in all of the main characters, from the masks that the geishas must hide behind to conceal their identities, to the search to find the true clan boss, to the establishment of Hattori as not just an incredibly skilled swordsman, but one who is trying to regain his own honor. His character is one of the strongest in the film, and is played beautifully by Asano who instills a reserved façade of contained power into his portrayal. Working as a bodyguard for the local gang, he is never allowed to simply be seen as hired muscle or as a destructive force devoid of emotion. Kitano gives Hattori a sick wife at home that he must care for, and even though there is not much dialogue present in their brief scenes together, the audience will completely understand Hattori's motivations and will be immediately drawn into the development of his character and will in turn begin to empathize with him.

Further expanding on the theme of the containment of a reserved power lurking beneath the surface, the fight scenes in THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI are unlike any that have been seen before in the series. While most sword fighting scenes feature drawn out back and forth exchanges of attacks and parries, in THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI, the scenes are incredibly short, focusing instead on delivering a lethal strike when the samurai sword is drawn. This creates an interesting visual dynamic within the film and imbues it with its own unique style. A character will explode with action, inflict the maximum amount of damage and then immediately contract again into the self. This expansion and contraction of the fighting when coupled with the explosiveness of the approach of dispatching with one's opponents in the quickest manner possible, creates some truly well choreographed fights throughout the film and serve to drive the action of the narrative brilliantly.

THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI is not without its flaws though. Two choices by Kitano to modernize the aesthetic of the film actually serve to undermine it. For the battle scenes, Kitano chose to add in CGI blood spurting out whenever someone is cut by a sword. This alone would have been fine, adding a distinctive visual flair to the picture, but Kitano takes it one step too far by adding in CGI swords in some moments. CGI sword tips are seen sticking out the other side of someone when they are impaled, or are seen flying through the air when a sword is thrown at someone. The fact is, the CGI in these short shots becomes distracting, and had Kitano opted to stick with physical effects to achieve the same shots, the visual result would have been more congruent with the rest of the film. Also, Kitano chose to include a tap dancing number, something that is normally not seen in a period piece set during the Edo period. While definitely a bold choice by the filmmaker, this too becomes more of a distraction than adding anything to the final product.

These flaws are only minimal criticisms though for an otherwise brilliant film. With its development of character and focus on showing the duality of human nature and the masks individuals choose to hide behind, and coupled with inventive fight choreography, THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI definitely ranks as a classic and a must see in the samurai genre.

For the Blu-ray release, there is a wonderful forty minute documentary highlighting the making of the film with lots of behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast and filmmakers. There is also a section of video interviews where crew members such as the cinematographer or the swordmaster each individually talk about some of the challenges they faced while shooting the movie. All in all some great bonus features that help give some good insight into the making of the remarkable movie.

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi [Blu-ray] Overview

Inventive and bold, this film shines with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In an empire ruled by fear, the people's only hope is the ultimate weapon: Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano) -- a blind, nomadic samurai whose sword has made him a hero and whose courage has made him a legend. Determined to help the desperate residents of a village, Zatoichi seeks justice through revenge. It's a wildly entertaining film that's even more brilliant in Blu-ray High Definition.

Bonus Features Include: Behind-The-Scenes Special, Exclusive Interviews With Crew

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi [Blu-ray] Specifications

Takeshi Kitano, the Japanese actor-director best known in the U.S. for his quirky, ulraviolent gangster movies (Fireworks, Brother, Sonatine) applies his off-kilter sensibility to the samurai genre in The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi. A blind masseur (Kitano with his hair dyed white) wanders into a small town divided up by rival gangs. Though hunched and shuffling, Zatoichi soon reveals his deadly skills as a swordsman. He befriends a pair of geisha girls with secrets of their own and helps them hunt down the bandits who killed their parents. But one of the gangs has just hired a ronin, a masterless samurai, whose fighting skill may equal the blind swordsman's. Zatoichi mixes a melodramatic storyline, deadpan comedy, and dazzling, CGI-enhanced swordfights into a supremely entertaining package. In Japan, Zatoichi is a recurring character in popular action movies, but Kitano places his own unique stamp on the series. --Bret Fetzer

Fan Boys [Blu-ray]

Fan Boys [Blu-ray] Review

This is a fun movie for all of Geekdom.... Star Wars fans will appreciate this one.

Story revolves around a group of friends who really aren't going anywhere.... where Eric (Sam Huntington) feels his life needs direction, as he listlessly works at his father's used car lot, even though his true passion is art, and creating his own comic book, something he put off thinking it was all pipe dreams. Then there are his friends, best friend Linus (Chris Marquette), nerd o'rama Windows (Jay Baruchel), and crazy man, Hutch (Dan Fogler) who has pimped out his van as if it is the Millennium Falcon, and nerd cutie Zoe (Kirsten Bell). These guys live and breath anything fanboy, whether it's arguing who fired first... Han or Greedo, which is better Empire or Jedi, arguing if Boba fett is a genuine bad ass or not, and basically repeating their favorite movie lines in everyday lingo (seriously who doesn't do that? my friends and I do it) anyways turns out Linus finds he has a terminal illness where he and Eric have drifted apart after high school, where Eric thinks what his friends do are childish games, that they never grew up, thinking he is the only one who really moved on from this nonsense, where as with the rest of the group it's a passion something they enjoy, like outdoor enthusiasts enjoying the outdoors, dog lovers that will do anything for an animal, people who collect garden gnomes, it's something they enjoy. Linus knows he will not see Star Wars Episode I, so when Eric realizes this he hatches a plan to go to Skywalker Ranch to steal a copy with the group. On the outside it's a buddy road trip movie, with it comes the hilarity, but deep down it wasn't about stealing one of the most anticipated movies to hit 1999, it's about knowing who your true friends are and spending one last adventure before it's too late, where Eric doesn't realize this until I think mid way through. Each of the characters find out who they are, and they too can follow their dreams no matter how big or ridiculous, Windoes finally see Zoe for who she is not just a best friend but deep down actually loves her, it's reciprocal, and Hutch follows his dreams of opening an Automotive Detailing Business.

Anyways hilarity ensues when they stop in Ohio the birth place of one James Tiberius Kirk, and Hutch gets into a fight with a bunch of Trekkies, one played by Seth Rogen, who also plays a pimp in Vegas. And when they do reach Skywalker ranch they run into some very animated Security Guards played by Will Arnett, and Craig Robinson. With More camoes by Shatner, Carrie Fischer, Billy Dee Williams, Kevin Smith.

This film is funny, and heartwarming (kind of odd for this type, some will argue it should of been a straight up comedy/ road trip movie, why the downer of having a character with a Terminal Illness and all, it still worked in my opinion).... Saw this will be released on Blu Ray... hopefully with some decent Special Features.... over all any Star wars fan, hell, any movie fan will enjoy this who likes comedy and a good laugh.

Fan Boys [Blu-ray] Overview

Low on inspiration and laughs, Fanboys is a movie that should have been made years ago. Christopher Marquette plays Linus, a would-be heir to a used-car dealership and former loser who rejects his high-school buddies' continuing preoccupation with childish things, including George Lucas' Star Wars saga. When his lifelong friend, Eric (Sam Huntington), is diagnosed in 1999 with a terminal illness, however, Linus joins geeky Windows (Jay Baruchel), wildman Hutch (Dan Fogler) and comely Zoe (Kirsten Bell) on a cross-country trip to steal a print of Star Wars: Phantom Menace from Lucas' Skywalker Ranch for Eric to have a look. Along the way, of course, sundry disasters and complications await, everything from getting caught in a gay biker bar to a confrontation with a Vegas pimp (Seth Rogen, genuinely funny). The misadventures at Skywalker include a few good moments, especially when the guards look like characters Lucas might have considered for either of the two trilogies. The best comic material concerns hostilities between Star Wars fanatics and Star Trek Trekkers, including a scene set in the Ohio hometown of James Tiberius Kirk. A few good cameos include William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, and Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. --Tom Keogh

Two Evil Eyes [Blu-ray]

Two Evil Eyes [Blu-ray] Review

George Romero and Dario Argento are undoubtedly two of the most iconic directors in the world of horror, yet for some reason, Two Evil Eyes has usually played last fiddle in comparison to either director's more prolific works. Both helm separate tales with Two Evil Eyes, which is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Romero's is "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar", in which a trophy wife (Adrienne Barbeau) and her doctor lover (Ramy Zada) plot to rid themselves of her old, wealthy husband. Then things end up taking a supernatural turn for the worse, naturally. This segment is far from the best you'll see from Romero, but it is a fun dirge nevertheless. Argento tackles one of Poe's finest and most renowned tales with "The Black Cat", in which a photographer (Harvey Keitel giving a great performance) is driven to murderous lengths after his girlfriend takes in a stray black cat. This segment is definitely the better of the two, as it showcases just what made Argento such a celebrated horror director in the first place with some spectacular camera work. In essence, Two Evil Eyes are Poe tales with more modern twists, featuring some pretty good gore effects by the great Tom Savini. And now that Blue Underground has released the film on Blu-Ray, it is more than worth discovering or re-discovering all over again. Look for a young Julie Benz (TV's Dexter) in a blink and you'll miss her role as Keitel's girlfriend's violin student.

Two Evil Eyes [Blu-ray] Overview

A Double Dose of Terror from the Directors of DAWN OF THE DEAD and SUSPIRIA

The masters of modern horror - George Romero and Dario Argento - bring you an unprecedented pair of shockers inspired by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. In Romero's "The Facts In The Case Of Mr. Valdemar," a conniving wife (Adrienne Barbeau of THE FOG) and her lover use a hypnotic trance to embezzle a fortune from her dying husband, only to receive some chilling surprises from beyond the grave. Then in Argento's "The Black Cat," a deranged crime scene photographer (Harvey Keitel of RESERVOIR DOGS) is driven to brutal acts of madness and murder by his girlfriend's new pet. But will this cunning feline deliver a final sickening twist of its own?

Martin Balsam (PSYCHO) and Tom Atkins (MANIAC COP) co-star in this wild horror hit that also features grisly effects by gore master Tom Savini (FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE PROWLER). Blue Underground is proud to present TWO EVIL EYES in a new High Definition transfer, featuring remixed 7.1 DTS-HD and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, and packed with exclusive Extras.

The Beast (Special Extended Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Beast (Special Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

I remember seeing this on TV a few years ago, and it was an awesome gigant squid movie. Since I'm into giant squid movies this was one I really enjoyed. This story was good and belieable, and the acting was convincing. I also liked all the special effects when the giant squid came on to the scenes. Sure, some might say that this type of movie is a lot like the Jaws movies. But actually I always thought that a giant squid is much better to have than a shark, especially since giant squids are kind of a legendary thing, not everyone apparently believes that they exist, although remains have been found that clearly show that the size shown in the film is not an exaggeration. Anyway, if you like suspenseful type of movies like Jaws, then you can't go wrong with this.

The Beast (Special Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

THE BEAST starring William Petersen from the best-selling author, Peter Benchley! Special Extended Version! Peter Benchley, the master of sea terror, returns with another tale of aquatic mayhem in this three hour, uncut version of The Beast. William L. Petersen (CSI, To Live and Die in LA) stars as Whip Dalton in this thrilling, nail-biting tale of man against the darkest secrets of the ocean deep. Fishing and jobs are becoming scarce in the small seaport village of Graves Point, when mysterious deaths and unexplained disappearances begin to occur. Divers vanish and a young couple disappears at sea, their empty raft washing up on the shore. When a large, strange claw is discovered on the raft, the unsettled towns-people call on the marine biologist Dr. Herbert Talley (Ronald Guttman), who identifies it as belonging to a rare giant squid. With the help of Whip Dalton, the hunt is on! It becomes a battle of wills between Dalton and Talley as they try to locate the Beast, without the Beast getting them. With almost 80 minutes of restored scenes previously edited from earlier releases, this is the original version, nominated for two Prime Time Emmy's. Directed by Jeff Bleckner, The Beast also stars Charles Martin Smith (Drive, The Triangle) and Karen Sillas (Wanted, Law and Order).

Out of Time (+ Widescreen DVD) [Blu-ray] Review

Suppose everything you knew--everything you trusted --became a lie. For Matt Lee Whitlock, that nightmare has become a reality.Matt is the chief of police in small Banyan Key, Florida. A hardworking man who's good at his job, he's respected by his peers and beloved by his community. Out of Time is a keeper, a sharp slice of crackling intrigue.

Out of Time (+ Widescreen DVD) [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 06/02/2009 Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Pg13

Out of Time (+ Widescreen DVD) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks. The Florida setting adds welcome character to the potboiler plot, and Washington's screen-cred makes it easy to overlook the absurdities of rookie writer David Collard's screenplay. Eva Mendes is sharp and sensible as Washington's estranged wife (do you think they'll reconcile for a happy ending?), and the talented John Billingsley--whose portrayal of "Dr. Phlox" on TV's Enterprise is vastly underrated--is a constant delight as Washington's medical examiner, beer buddy and wily co-conspirator. It's hardly a classic, but Out of Time goes well with a big tub of popcorn. --Jeff Shannon

Tho the quality of this blueray is perfectly acceptable and good, a lot of the shots are shot facing left so you are watching the water *go* away from you, and as humans our minds and eyes naturally gravitate to the source of the water and want to gaze that way, and so when you look right to see where it's orginating from you can't see, and i find it's as effective as a brick wall to me, mentally. But this is just the first three shots.

The second composition problem for the next 5 or six shots is you are often getting an angle that is akin to laying on your stomach looking up: you get more ground/earth in the shot than sky or sea, which makes it feel like you have a ceiling pressing down on your head. It feels a little clostrophobic at times.

That said, this dvd is worth buying if you like beaches. Are they the most relaxing beautiful beaches in all the world? No. They aren't amazing green/blue water tropical beaches, either. They are more rustic, muted-colored beaches, more new england, than Virgin Islands. Are the uninhabited for the duration of the filming? No. People walk thru about three shots in total. It's not horribly invasive but it IS invasive if you are relaxing. You start anticipating when they will arrive when you've seen it more than once.

That said, there are more good shots in this bluray than bad! And that makes it worth while. And even the 'bad' aren't truly bad at all. They just aren't perfect, they irk, but they don't really destroy, and I could most certainly get used to them, and even enjoy them, eventually.

There are five or so shots of beaches in a row that are filmed facing head-on with just the ocean, the sand, and sky which are really nice, and give a width and depth and peace that is good. There is very nice shot of a sunset on the beach and it's great fun after work to watch this particular scene of the orange fireball sliding into the water and totally out of the sky... I really enjoyed that. Another nice straight-on beach/sand shot of birds bobbing in the water.

All and all if you like beaches for relaxing, the price of this dvd is great, and you can watch it start to finish without it jarring you. I am not sorry I bought it at all-- and I can't say that for all the other 'beach' scene dvds I own and paid 3x more for.

It certainly has great long, relaxing and worthwhile moments, even with the skewed composition. It has good replay relaxation/ambiance value.

Orphan [Blu-ray]

Orphan [Blu-ray] Review

This is the third time this movie has been remade. The original was made in 1956 called The Bad Seed. It was about this 11-year-old girl who, although looked cute and innocent with those blonde pigtails, was really in fact evil. I watched snippets of the film and didn't find it scary at all. Then in 1993 there was "The Good Son", starring Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood. Henry (played by Culkin) appears to be the good son, but Mark (Wood) sees his true colours. This movie scared me. Macaulay Culkin's performance is phenomenal; a 10, no question. Now Orphan (2009) takes a different approach. Here you have a 9-year-old girl named Esther. Esther is orphaned because her adopted parents were killed and the house was burned down. Again, Esther seems sweet and innocent, but evil lurks behind. The end of the movie shocked me, and probably a few other people too. I was not expecting it. Isabelle Fuhrman plays Esther, and she does a remarkable job in the role. Hope to see her in future movies.

Orphan [Blu-ray] Overview

Tragedy seems to follow nine-year-old Esther. She was orphaned in her native Russia. Her last adoptive family perished in a fire Esther barely escaped. But now the Coleman family has adopted her, and life is good. Until a classmate takes a serious fall from a slide. Until an orphanage nun is battered to death. And until Esther’s new mom wonders if that tragic fire was an accident. From Dark Castle Productions comes Orphan, bringing stunning new twists to the psychological thriller and locking audiences in a tightening vise of mystery, suspicion and terror. You’ll never forget Esther. So sweet. So intelligent. So creative. So disturbed.

Features:
- Mama's Little Devils: Bad Seeds and Evil Children: cast and crew reinvent the evil kid genre and discuss notable movie psychopaths
- Additional scenes, including an alternate ending
- BD-Live features

Orphan [Blu-ray] Specifications

A bad seed with a Russian accent, 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is a nasty little girl with a nasty little plan. Unfortunately, this malevolent tyke has landed in the home of adoptive parents Kate and John (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard), an unsuspecting couple with two kids of their own and considerable grief over recent family tragedies. It doesn't take long for Esther to make her creepy presence known, as broken limbs on the playground and torched tree houses can attest. Give this movie some credit--the psychological underpinnings are all set carefully in place: Maternal trauma? Check. Backyard pond as emotionally charged danger zone? Check. Feminist parable about husbands not listening to troubled wives? Check. The casting of reputable actors such as Farmiga and Sarsgaard also ups the movie's class quotient; Farmiga in particular has an emotional workout, and this gifted actress strikes few false notes even as the scenario becomes increasingly lurid. (There's some déjà vu here: Farmiga also played a mother realizing her kid was "not right" in Joshua, a much superior film.) Director Jaume Collet-Serra, of House of Wax notoriety, knows full well the unsettling weirdness of seeing a child commit murderous mayhem, and he presses all the buttons with something like unholy joy. The movie begins to drive off the rails even before a clumsy twist hits the fan near the end, and at that point, the mechanical exercise becomes downright silly. The Omen's Damien has nothing to worry about. --Robert Horton

National Geographic: Kingdom of the Blue Whale [Blu-ray]

National Geographic: Kingdom of the Blue Whale [Blu-ray] Review

After watching this DVD today at the Marine Mammal rescue operations site in Morro Bay, CA, I was enthralled with the information I gained. Researchers all over the world in all areas of science deserve our respect and awe at their dedication and insight. I didn't go into it expecting to see tons of underwater photography, so I wasn't disappointed in the least. This was one of the best documentaries I have seen in a while. It is now on my Christmas list and I will be sharing it with anyone interested in whales, conservation and education. As for it being unrated, I am a retired grade two and three teacher, and due to the level of the content, might be more appropriate for grades seven and above, or the age equivalent, as teachers rarely have the time to show something of this length. I didn't find the parts with the whale carcasses particularly offensive, just wondered how the folks working with them could stand the odor so well. Yes, some frames are repeated, but I think that happens often in documentaries. I look forward to the time when a follow-up can be made so we can know what they further have learned.

National Geographic: Kingdom of the Blue Whale [Blu-ray] Overview

Big Blue sets out on an expedition to discover the secrets of the blue whale, and reveal its unknown calving and breeding grounds. National Geographic has supported the research of the worlds top blue whale scientist for years. Now, by working with them, we go on a mission around the globe. We dive deep under the surface with blue whales to discover what they do at depth. We use satellite tags to reveal their mammoth migrations. We identify individual whales to understand populations. DNA analysis reveals gender related behavioral differences. We explore the sea floor and water currents to uncover blue whale feeding strategies. Hydro acoustic microphones reveal whale song and whole dialects in blue whale communication. Ultimately we follow the California population of blue whales to a remote area of open ocean off Costa Rica . If we and our scientists are right, we will reveal the secret calving and breeding grounds of blue whales.
