The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray]

The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray] Review

The Jackal is one of my favorite movies of all time. This review is not of the movie, but some technical aspects. As far as the picture, the 1080p is a stunning improvement over dvd. Content is one double sided flipper disc: one side the BD, the other the dvd. You can't play both at the same time, but fortunately I have my old single dvd copy which I'm keeping. You may be wondering why? Because Universals put the director audio commentary, as well as extras (the making of), on the dvd, not the BD side! Very frustrating. Fortunately I have 2 BD players to run both if I ever need the 2nd audio channel while watching the BD. However, the BD side does include 2 features which aren't a big deal: BD-live ticker (pop up facts), which you'll need online connection to. And scene access, by using the 4 colored buttons on your remote.

The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray] Overview

Bruce Willis is a ruthless assassin, known only as The Jackal, who has been hired to eliminate someone at the very top of the U.S. government. In order to track down this cold-blooded killer and prevent the hit, the FBI’s Deputy Director (Sidney Poitier) and a Russian intelligence officer (Diane Venora) enlist the aid of an imprisoned Irish terrorist (Richard Gere). These unlikely allies enter a global race against the clock to stop the mysterious mercenary before he can complete his deadly assignment.

The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray] Specifications

The best way to enjoy this 1997 thriller is to forget the much better film that inspired it (1973's The Day of the Jackal) and get whatever kicks you can from this heavy-metal remake. It's not bad as hokey thrillers go, but all of the original film's suspenseful finesse has been traded in (not traded up) for bigger, bolder action and nonsensical plotting. It's as if Hollywood had forgotten to create excitement without resorting to overblown action and heavy hardware, but there's ample compensation in the casting of Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. Willis is the elusive assassin known only as the Jackal, whose latest target (he uses a cannon-sized gun that's anything but inconspicuous) may be the first lady of the United States. Gere plays a former IRA terrorist who is recruited by the deputy head of the FBI (Sidney Poitier) to trace the Jackal's maneuvers, and Diane Venora offers some gutsy support as a Russian-born agent who assists Gere on his mission. The movie has fun turning Willis into a master of disguise, and Gere adds much-needed gravity to counter the plot's escalating absurdity, but this is the kind of film that falls apart if you think about it too much. --Jeff Shannon

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray]

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray] Review

This DVD has a great collection of the Pixar shorts. Many of the shorts help show how far Pixar has come and how creative they are. 'Presto' and 'For The Birds' alone make this DVD worth having. The chess game short (don't remember the title) is boring, so I usually skip it. It would have received 5 stars from me, but the price is a bit excessive. Most places I have seen it sell it for .00 +. Many of the Pixar full length movies don't sell for that much. If you don't mind the high price, it is a good collection of family friendly cartoons.

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 11/06/2007 Run time: 54 minutes

Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 [Blu-ray] Specifications

Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in "Geri's Game" and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in "Boundin'." Some of the more recent shorts continue the adventures of the characters from the features. "Jack-Jack Attack" reveals what happened to the hapless baby-sitter while the Incredibles were off fighting Syndrome, while "Mater and the Ghost Light" shows that life goes on for the inhabitants of Radiator Springs. When Sully from Monsters, Inc. tries to adjust his seat in "Mike's New Car," the animators prolong the moment to wring every drop of humor from the situation--just as an earlier generation of animators milked Wile E. Coyote's antics for all they were worth. The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus. A delightful collection of entertaining shorts, and a significant chronicle of the growth of computer animation. (Rated G: suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray]

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

"Shop smart! Shop... S-Mart." I think this movie is THE MOST ENTIRELY AWESOME ZOMBIE SPOOF FILM EVER MADE! Ever!!! We must have watched it 30 times. I mean, Bruce Campbell is great looking but he's also a pretty good actor and he's definitely a great action star. "Who wants some! Huh?" There are fight scenes and surprises and screaming gore in Army like nothing else in any other horror film, not even the Return series, which are hilarious and great but not quite as fun as this one. So I'll leave you with one thought here. "Yeah, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been King. But my place is here. Hail to the King, baby." YES!!!!!

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

All primitive screwheads, listen up! Cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) reunites with director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man) to battle the deadly forces of evil in Army of Darkness - the outrageous, effects-fueled action epic that will make you scream with fear and laughter. Forced to lead a makeshift Dark Ages army against the demonic Deadites, who possess all the deadly magic of hell, the shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed, reluctant 20th century time traveler Ash (Campbell) must save the living from the dead, rescue his medieval girlfriend and get back to his own time. One of the most popular horror comedies of all time, now digitally remastered and loaded with bonus features, Army of Darkness Screwhead Edition is drop-dead fun!

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

H.Bala, apparently you don't know good acting when you see it.Obviously, you are too narrow-minded to see the full embodiment of the film and simply never will.

Any way, this was a great film.It went in-depth into the human mind and the recesses in which the things that make us tick reside. It was also hilarious and full of affection. To me it gave the image of two worlds binding together, traditional paranormal and modern psychology. And the dancing is awesome!

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo Review

It's September 1944, and with "D-day" already 3 months behind them and winter just 3 months in front of them, the Allies are anxious to accelerate their advance on the Germans. In northern Europe, the battle lines run through Belgium near the border with the Netherlands. It appears to be the perfect time to deploy their airborne army made up of British and American troops.

A plan is hurriedly struck: the Allies - using parachutes and thousands of gliders - are going to drop tens of thousands of troops, equipment, and vehicles along a 63 mile (100 kilometer) road from the Belgium border to a bridge that crosses the Rhine river in Arnheim near the German border. The airborne army will secure the bridges, while a ground army - starting from Belgium - races up to join them.

General Browning (not his real name) is responsible for the execution of operation Market Garden. He calls together his commanders, spells out the mission, and tells them they have 7 days to prepare.

A few days before September 17th, reports from the Arnheim Dutch underground begin to trickle in about recent German deployments in the area. General Browning dismisses the reports, but one of his officers convinces him to send in an aircraft to check it out.

It seems part of human nature, that once you have made up your mind, it is difficult to change it. General Browning believes in the plan, he has a personal investment in it, but then, when pictures come back showing the situation is not as he thought ... watch his face as he struggles to find a way to discount this contrary information ...

Picture (Blue-ray): 4. Sound: The music is much louder than the voice track.

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo Overview

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo Specifications

This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

Surgery on PS3 (YLOD fix)

DISCLAIMER: This should not be attempted by you, or anyone else...EVER. My PlayStation 3 gave me the Yellow Light of Death this week. Instead of paying Sony $150 to fix it, I decided to try to do it myself, following various online tutorials. I figured that even if it didn't work, it would still be an interesting experience. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The first attempt was unsuccessful. So I took it over to my computer-engineering buddy, Chris. He determined that I hadn't applied enough thermal grease. This was causing the system to rapidly overheat, and the fan to freak out. (At the end of this video, it actually wasn't quite fixed yet. The BD-drive didn't work. I had to open it up a few more times to fix the ribbon-cable connector.) Works great now! Watched "WALL*E" on Blu-ray last night. THERMAL COMPOUND: Purchased from my local Best Buy. I went to the computer area and asked for thermal grease. They showed me: "Dynex® - Silver Thermal Compound" HEAT GUN: Purchased from my local Lowe's ($24.98)

One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray]

One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray] Review

Despite what other people said, i thought the movie was absolutely awesome! There were scenes in the movie that made you want to laugh your gut out and others that made you fired up!!! (THE BATTLE SCENES!!)

-The animation was high-quality and very well drawn, yet some people had the nerve to call it "UGLY" and "REPULSIVE", i think Eiichiro Oda has a great drawing style.
-The movie length it's self was okay...but it's worth watching!!
-The english dub...not so good, but not bad.
-The Japanese dub...VERY GOOD, THE ORIGINAL

FINAL VERDICT!: A exciting movie with an original storyline that is great for any "OTAKU" or anyone who wants to have a good laugh!

One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray] Overview

The island kingdom of Alabasta is about to erupt in civil war – a war engineered by Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, and his criminal organization Baroque Works. Monkey D. Luffy, his Straw Hat pirates and Princess Vivi race to the island, where the strongest warriors of Baroque Works wait to stop them. Can Vivi and her friends stop an entire war? And how can Luffy fight Crocodile, when Crocodile can turn into sand?

One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray] Specifications

A desert may seem like an unlikely place for pirates, but Luffy and his Straw Hat crew fight for Princess Vivi in the eighth One Piece movie, subtitled "The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta." Crocodile and his Baroque Works gang foment a civil war in Alabasta, so they can control the country after most of its warriors have been killed. Crocodile also hopes to gain control of the Pluton, an ultimate weapon that may or may not exist. But Luffy and the Straw Hats charge to Vivi's rescue. Having eaten the Suna Suna or Sand Fruit, Crocodile can turn any part of his body into sand--a trick that may remind viewers of Gaara in Naruto. The climactic battle between the two pirate leaders pits Crocodile's sand transformations against Luffy's Gum Gum limbs and wits. Despite its title, One Piece: Movie 8 consists of recut footage from the "Alabasta" story arc of the TV series with some bits of additional animation. The repurposed footage doesn't always fit together: the film opens in the middle of an adventure and some important story elements get lost in the shuffle, including how Luffy is saved from the poisoned wound Crocodile inflicts. These inconsistencies probably won't bother One Piece fans. (Rated PG-13: violence, risqué humor, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

South Pacific [Blu-ray]

South Pacific [Blu-ray] Review

I was just a (very) little girl when we went to a "drive in" and saw this movie.

I have never forgotten it.

I was so glad to see this out on DVD and bought it immediately, but am just now getting around to reviewing it. However, I think I will review it from my five year old eyes, because this movie helped shaped me into the person I am today.

In 1958 ('59 when we watched it)I wasn't exposed to many races of people, but I was exposed to racism, in the things grown ups would say at parties, or children would parrot on playgrounds. I hadn't formed any opinions on it, and, until this movie, I had never be exposed to "the other side" of the argument.

As a little girl, I loved Bloody Mary's daughter, and the "Happy Talk" scene in the beautiful water slide and pool of what I now know to be Kauai. My siblings and I would sing that song all the time, since my mother bought us the album. But the song I remember the most, out of the amazing score? When the young soldier and nurse sing, "You have to be taught to hate and fear, it has to be drummed in your dear little ear."

It made such an impression on me, and I have never, ever, forgotten the power of the songs in this show. Did the situation between the young soldier and Bloody Mary's daughter change me forever? Yes. It did. I have never forgotten those lessons, and my "opinions" on race have remained the same ever since.

So for me, this movie was simply a gift. Who knows what I would have grown up to be like, or how many years it might have taken had I not been very aware of what was trying to be "drummed into my dear little ear" and resisted it?

There are so many wonderful things about this movie, my sister's favorite is still the "Honeybun" show, my mom's was "wash that man right out of my hair" and I loved the scenes shot at the old Hanalei plantation where Nellie danced with the Frenchman.

It's lovely.
It's powerful.
It should be in every video collection.

It's a family movie with powerful messages, and yes, your children WILL get it, while enjoying the wonderful songs.

South Pacific [Blu-ray] Overview

For its Blu-ray release, South Pacific underwent a complete photochemical restoration of its original 65mm negative, and underwent an 8k high definition scan of the brand new interpositive.  For the first time in high definition, you can enjoy Leon Shamroy's widescreen photography of the Hawaiian locations and be dazzled by director Joshua Logan’s famous filtered sequences.  The original soundtrack will, for the first time ever, be presented in uncompressed, Lossless DTS audio.

South Pacific [Blu-ray] Specifications

The dazzling Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, brought to lush life by the director of the original stage version, Joshua Logan. Set on a remote island during the Second World War, South Pacific tracks two parallel romances: one between a Navy nurse (Mitzi Gaynor) "as corny as Kansas in August" and a wealthy French plantation owner (Rossano Brazzi), the other between a young American officer (John Kerr) and a native girl (France Nuyen). The theme of interracial love was still daring in 1958, and so was director Logan's decision to overlay emotional moments with tinted filters--a technique that misfires as often as it hits. The comic relief tends to fall flat, and an overly spunky Mitzi Gaynor is a poor substitute for the stage original's Mary Martin. But the location scenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is gorgeous, and the songs are among the finest in the American musical catalog: "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger than Springtime," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "This Nearly Was Mine." That's Juanita Hall as the sly native trader Bloody Mary, singing the haunting tune that launched a thousand tiki bars, "Bali H'ai." Based on stories from James Michener's book Tales from the South Pacific. --Robert Horton

That's it That's All Blu-Ray Review

I have seen a lot of videos over the years and this was is by far the craziest! Beautiful scenery, insane avalanche scene and mountain and huge big air tricks. This movie is actually worth more than what they are asking. I relate this to Planet Earth on Blu ray. It's a long movie and not the standard short movies where you kind of feel robbed. In my opinion whoever filmed this should start filming other sports films that are progressive like this one is. BUY THIS MOVIE!!

Classic Game Room HD - PS3 vs. ATARI 7800 review

Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of the PLAYSTATION 3 PS3 video game console VS. the ATARI 7800 ProSystem. Yes the PS3 is one of the hottest game systems on the market, and yes the Atari 7800 was wiped out of existence by the Nintendo Entertainment System NES, but which is really better? With hot games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Grand Theft Auto vs. Pole Position 2 and Galaga, this should be an exciting battle. Now the the Bluray and HD-DVD format war are regarded as over, what does that really mean? Does Blu-Ray have a rosey future, or has the real format war just begun? In the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii battle for video game supremacy who will win? Some of these questions are brought to the table in this look from the technical side of things as the PS3. For your hard earned dollars how good is this thing and should you buy it or an Atari 2600? Now that the big games like Gran Turismo Prologue and Grand Theft Auto are upon us, should you sell a kidney to buy a PS3? Or is the Sega Genesis still a better game system? CGR-HD has spent some time with the new Sony monster and has spent time with the Xbox... so let's hear it. Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. Wii, PS3, Xbox 360. PS3 games, ps3 game, playstation 3 ...

Meet the Robinsons [Blu-ray]

Meet the Robinsons [Blu-ray] Review

If you're looking for a funny animated film which is a little off-the-wall, "Meet the Robinsons" should satisfy. I would say it is more of a family-oriented movie with simple messages kids of any age can learn. While I didn't find it as fulfilling as recent films like "Wall-E" or "Up", it was still rather entertaining in its own way.

Lewis is a 12 year-old orphan who loves science and tries to invent things, though not always successfully. After over a hundred unsuccessful adoption interviews, he decides to invent something which can display a person's memories on a TV screen so that he would be able to see his mother who abandoned him years ago. Perhaps she gave him up originally because she couldn't care for him and is now ready to do so. Lewis is desperate to find a loving family to be his own.

Taking the device to a science fair, Lewis encounters Wilbur Robinson, a 13 year old boy from the future. Wilbur has come to protect Lewis from an evil guy wearing a bowler hat. He isn't successful. The evil man - whose bowler hat seems to have a mind of its own and is smarter than its wearer - sabotages and then steals Lewis' invention. Soon Lewis ends up in the future with Wilbur via a time machine which is then quickly damaged. Wilbur says it's up to Lewis to fix the machine, but Lewis feels defeated after so many failed experiments.

While in the future, Lewis accidentally encounters Wilbur's odd extended family. The grandfather leads him around, showing him a variety of sights including the woman with a singing band of frogs with a Sinatra-type lead, an almost-superhero who actually delivers pizzas in a spacecraft, and the twins who hide near the front door asking people to ring their doorbell. Lewis quickly feels at home with the odd bunch, a feeling that only increases after they protect him from the bowler hat guy who arrives in his own stolen time machine to take Lewis away. In the end there is still the question of Lewis possibly discovering who his real mother was.

The storyline is somewhat simple which makes it good for all ages. All the time Wilbur is trying to encourage Lewis to believe in himself and to "keep moving forward" and learn from mistakes instead of getting down. It's a good simple message for everyone and the goofball characters provide it in a rather entertaining fashion.

Meet the Robinsons [Blu-ray] Specifications

Developing positive self-esteem and persevering in the face of difficulties are fundamental parts of growing up, but when 12-year old orphan Lewis (Daniel Hansen and Jordan Fry) can't seem to get adopted or make his inventions work despite repeated efforts, he begins to seriously doubt himself and his abilities as an inventor. A CGI picture by Disney with great animation and a fresh vision of what the future might look like, Meet The Robinsons follows Lewis from his lonesome days at the orphanage to his crushing failure at the school science fair when his newly invented memory scanner won't work. Then, an odd boy named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman) shows up to warn Lewis about the mysterious "Bowler Hat Guy" (Stephen J Anderson) lurking around the science fair, an evil man Wilbur claims is from the future. The next thing Lewis knows, he and Wilbur are on route to the future via time machine. Once there, Lewis meets the very quirky, extended Robinson family with whom he feels oddly at home. As the search for the Bowler Hat Man and his constant companion Doris (Ethan Sandler) becomes more and more dangerous, the Robinson family becomes crucial in keeping Lewis safe. In the end, Lewis returns to the present with a whole new inner strength, a sense of his place in the world, the knowledge that his actions directly affect others, and an optimistic determination to "keep moving forward." While comparisons with the Back to the Future films are inevitable, Meet the Robinsons stands apart from its predecessors as its own, thoroughly entertaining family film. (Ages 4 and older)

Included is the seven-minute 1938 short Mickey Mouse's Boat Builder in which Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck order and assemble a do-it-yourself boat kit and launch an impressive ocean liner dubbed the "Queen Minnie." Needless to say, hilarity reigns throughout and following the boat-building process. --Tami Horiuchi
