Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo Review

It's September 1944, and with "D-day" already 3 months behind them and winter just 3 months in front of them, the Allies are anxious to accelerate their advance on the Germans. In northern Europe, the battle lines run through Belgium near the border with the Netherlands. It appears to be the perfect time to deploy their airborne army made up of British and American troops.

A plan is hurriedly struck: the Allies - using parachutes and thousands of gliders - are going to drop tens of thousands of troops, equipment, and vehicles along a 63 mile (100 kilometer) road from the Belgium border to a bridge that crosses the Rhine river in Arnheim near the German border. The airborne army will secure the bridges, while a ground army - starting from Belgium - races up to join them.

General Browning (not his real name) is responsible for the execution of operation Market Garden. He calls together his commanders, spells out the mission, and tells them they have 7 days to prepare.

A few days before September 17th, reports from the Arnheim Dutch underground begin to trickle in about recent German deployments in the area. General Browning dismisses the reports, but one of his officers convinces him to send in an aircraft to check it out.

It seems part of human nature, that once you have made up your mind, it is difficult to change it. General Browning believes in the plan, he has a personal investment in it, but then, when pictures come back showing the situation is not as he thought ... watch his face as he struggles to find a way to discount this contrary information ...

Picture (Blue-ray): 4. Sound: The music is much louder than the voice track.

Bridge Too Far DVD + Blu-ray Combo Specifications

This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane
